Mow your lawn Responsibly

How large a lawn do you need to mow?

If your lawn is smaller, the size of most "in-town" lots, and/or if your lot is flat, perhaps you can consider mowing it with a reel mower powered by yourself! This is the most eco-friendly option and, if maintained properly with the blades kept sharp, this option can produce a very clean cut.

If your lawn is too large or rolling to cut conveniently with a reel mower, why not consider a corded or rechargeable battery operated electric lawn mower? They are much cleaner (for the environment) and quieter than a gas powered mower and require less money for maintenance.

For lots where corded or cordless lawnmowers will not suffice, consider using a four-stroke gasoline engine with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). These lawnmowers emit less pollutants and will work longer on an equivalent amount of fuel when compared to two-stroke and non EFI four-stroke gasoline powered lawnmowers. Proper maintenance (replacing the spark plug/changing the oil/keeping the blades sharp, removing build-up) will help improve efficiency and reduce pollutants.

For acreage, consider Diesel powered ride-on mowers, an option that is more efficient than gasoline. Another less popular, at the moment, but far cleaner option is a propane powered ride-on mower.

And there are solar powered and electric robotic mowers, but they are still very expensive, perhaps in time they too, become a pragmatic option.

If your lawn is beyond repair, consider other more environmentally friendly lawn alternatives. Ideal seeding times are the fall and spring.

We had a yard full of Creeping Thyme in California - low water and low maintenance and bloomed beautifully, but our HOA would not allow something like that.  We mow using the fastest method possible.  Maybe hybrid car tech will come to mowers and we'll have plugin gas/electric someday.

I'd have to go with an eco friendly gas mower. My lawn is too large for an electric mower. I recently had to buy a gas weed wacker as the two, hundred foot extension cords kept getting tangled. I do agree that when I purchase lawn equipment I need to look at the effect on the environment

Chris, I saw that they had those newfangled human-powered puch mowers at Walmart for $99. What an environmentally friendly new innovative option that's perfectly suitable for our times :-)  and you're right, if someone does have a regular city-sized lot with a small plot of grass, it really wouldn't be all that much effort to use one of them. It certainly beats spending 15 minutes wrenching on a pull-chord.

Good morning, Chris. I have been considering an electric/battery mower. My only concern is that I do have an one acre lot and there may not be enough charge to do the whole lawn in one cutting...

Daniel, some of the new electric mowers are very efficient (and quiet also)

Thank You Chuck

Tom, if you can consider the environment and save money it is a win win

Malcolm, these "new" fangled mowers remind me of the mower I cut my parent lawn when we lived in a semi-detached home in North York.  It did a perfectly good job, was quiet and did not pollute, except perhaps for the shower I needed ;-)

Michael, a one acre lot is probably beyond the boundaries of current cordless electric technology, but perhaps soon...

while researching this I found some neat robotic units, but they are still too pricey...

Something is telling us that we know what you did today Chris! LOL!  Funny you should post on lawnmowers, can you believe someone in this household thinks they can do it themselves?? LOL!

Chris - I am not very impressed with the battery operated mowers.  One person I know purchased one last year and is now only getting about 15 or 20 minutes of mowing time before needing a 12 hour recharge.  Earlier, it would provide about 40 minutes of mowing time which is still not enough to cut the lawn.

Peggy, I don't picture Al as the lawn mowing type... perhaps the ROBOMower?

Marc, when we lived in Beeton, we used a corded mower and it was fine... the cord is an issue at first, but you learn how to mow your lawn in a pattern that requires the least movement of the cord quickly... I do not have experience with a cordless mower, but have heard that the newer batteries hold charges much longer.
