ALAMEDA WALKS - THE GOLD COAST

 

ALAMEDA WALKS - THE GOLD COAST  The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department sponsors ALAMEDA WALKS a program started in 2003.  According to Patrick Russi, Recreation Supervisor, the goal was to get people out of their homes on Saturday mornings for a little exercise and a chance to learn a little about the city of Alameda.  

 

 

Patrick's previous walks have included St. Josephs/Notre Dame and surrounding areas, Jackson Park and the Cohen Estate, Lincoln Park and East Bay Regional Park District Tidewater Aquatic Center and the Farmer's Market and the Sand Castle Contest at Crown Beach.

 

 

 

On June 11, at 9a.m., Patrick will lead the Alameda Walks - The Gold Coast group through the area of Alameda called the Gold Coast.  The first stop is Franklin Park, in the heart of the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is a residential district which features tree-lined streets and lovely, imposing Victorian, Tudor and Craftsman homes.  In the 1920s Charles L. Tilden, a resident of the Gold Coast and a member of the City Council advocated purchasing estates to develop Franklin Park.  The park is a serene and popular setting in the Gold Coast.  Tilden subsequently became the first president of the East Bay Regional Park District.  Tilden Park is named in his honor.

 

 

In the later 1800s and early 1900s many San Franciscans had grand summer homes in the Gold Coast.  The Gold Coast had lush oak woodlands, warmer weather than San Francisco and a fine beach nearby.  When the 1906 earthquake destroyed their homes in the City, some moved to Alameda permanently.


The Gold Coast is no longer on the coast, but it is still golden and it is the premier place to live in Alameda.  Here are a few examples of the beautiful homes you will see in your visit to Alameda Walks - The Gold Coast.
