Walking in San Diego, CA. An uphill battle.

My wife and I enjoy walking when we're home in MI. The time alone gives us an opportunity to talk, to reflect on the day and connect with one another. The combination of sunshine, fresh air and companionship helps us stay balanced.

Whenever we travel, we like to continue our walks and take in some different scenery.

Recently we were in San Diego, CA visiting my Dad. He lives on the eastern side of town with a lot of hills and mountains in the area and Dad just happens to live on a small mountain. When we go walking, it's an uphill battle to get from point A to point B. Even when we're walking down the hill, we have to walk at a slight angle so as not to fall forward too much in our stride. We've found different routes to take. If we just do an around the block up and down walk, it's like interval training. First we get the uphill stress, then the downhill cool down.

This is the street going up on an angle.

You can see from this picture how the street behind Dads house is much lower than his property. And at a steep angle.

In this picture, notice how the roof line is level with the street.

Here's a picture going down hill with a mountain in the background.

Here's a picture of Cowle's mountain. We've climbed this before. That's going to be the next story.

Walking is good for the mind, body and soul. Get out and go for a walk today.

See how refreshed you'll feel when you get back. Enjoy the day.

Have you ever climbed the Eiffel Tower? If not, it's a great reason to visit Paris. I mean it! :-)

Karen, we enjoy the time spent walking. It's revitalizing.

Michael, the walks in MI are all flat land, so this was a bit of a challenge. It actually felt good to strain a little.

Virginia, that sounds like a voice of experience. I imagine the view is worth the climb.

Ted, all of the above. We've done a bit of sightseeing while in town. Very pleasant.

Craig - first what a beautiful city San Diego is and I love the first photo! I'm a hiker and when I can't, I walk to. When I visited San Fransisco, I walked the whole city and lost about 5 lbs by the end of the vacation. It's a good way to really see the sights and of course capture great photos like the ones you got!

Craig,

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoy a walk in the woods with your wife. All couples should do that and share the pleasures of nature. As you say, it's good for the mind, body and soul.

San Diego is a beautiful place and your photos are absolutely gorgeous! My daughter lived there before her move to Europe and she really enjoyed it. I did too whenever I paid her visits. There's so much happiness derived in getting outdoors, and San Diego has many places to really get in touch with nature and see things that you don't ordinarily see.

You narrated your trip very well and made it sound so inviting. I hope you get to visit your dad again soon!

Kristine, whenever we go anywhere, the walking shoes get packed. It's good to get out and see the different surroundings at a leisurely pace and get some good pictures. The health benefit is a definite bonus.

Chris, the uphill is a bit grueling and the cool down is welcome even though it's on a steep decline. The whole walk is challenging.

I have never been to San Diego, but after seeing these pictures, I think I will put it on my list of places I want to visit.

Patricia, San Diego has a year round average temperature of 72*. How can you avoid getting out and enjoying that? There's plenty to see and do in town. The beaches are also great, There's volleyball :)   we try to get out to visit at least once a year.

Kathy, if you do get a chance, you will not be disappointed. Get out and see the sights. One week isn't enough time. Go for two weeks and enjoy yourself.

Craig - I love San Diego - a beautiful place and your pictures bring back memories of the times I have visited there.  I think it is awesome how you and your wife walk together.  What a great chance to enjoy being together away from the distraction of television & phones.  There is not a better way to learn about other areas you visit then in walking...PLUS...YOU GET THE ADDED VALUE OF EXERCISE.

Craig ... Walking and hiking around places visited, San Diego in your situation, can be lots of fun, and is indeed good for mind, body and soul.  It looks like you got some good hills workouts too.  My wife and I like visiting new places and hiking around whenever we are away from our home town here at Irvine, CA.

Barbara, even at home, we go for walks on a regular basis. Sometimes in our neighborhood or we'll hope in the car and walk through a local park. We enjoy those "away from it all" times. BTW -- My Dad lived in Dallas before San Diego. He has fond memories of Dallas.

Harrison, if you get a chance to go to San Diego, Cowles Mountain is a nice little 45 minute hike and very popular.

Hi Craig, Where have you been. No posts for a week? LOL

Last time I was in San Fransisco, it was like trying to walk up a mountain side. San Diego has nothing on San Fran. But that's my opinion.

Have a great Fathers day.

Clint, thanks for noticing my absence. Playing catch up with other matters after two weeks in San Diego. I've never been in San Francisco so I can't compare.   Happy Father's day to you as well.

I walk between 2 and 4 miles a day. Mostly I can clear my mind and enjoy it... sometimes not. But I always feel better afterward. (Plus, I can have dessert later!)

Pamela, thank you for checking in on me. I appreciate it. Summer IS here. Time to play. The hills were challenging, but well worth the effort.

Ken & Leslye, walking is the easiest and most beneficial exercise we can get for the body AND the mind. Make it a small dessert and it won't hurt. You earned it.
