WHAT'S ON YOUR ROOF? DOES IT MATTER?

The overall look of your home including the roofs pitch and shape is important.  What is just as important is what is ON your roof.  Roofing materials can attribute to your homes character but it can also dictate how long your roof will last.  When purchasing a home it is important to have the roof checked by a professional roofing company.  They will be able to help you with condition, how long the roof will last, what materials are best for your home and of course the cost of repair or replacement if needed.

Let's take a look at some roofing materials commonly used:

•1)      Asphalt or composition shingles:  This is the most common used roof material.  It goes with pretty much any style home and most contractors are familiar with how to install it.  The least expensive 3-tab shingles will last 15-20 years while the heavier, more expensive shingle with the 3 dimensional look can survive up to 40 years.

•2)      Clay tiles and concrete:  Stylish and will give the best look to certain style homes such as Spanish or Mediterranean.  This is used more in warmer climates as the clay heats up more slowly.  Tiles are lighter weight than concrete but are more fragile.  These materials could last 50-100 years.  They are more expensive than a shingle roof, take longer to install and will require an experienced roof to install.

•3)      Metal:  A unique choice that can look modern or ruggedly chic.  They come in many colors and weathers well.  They are manufactured in shapes from shingles to panels, in various thickness and textures too.  However; metal can be noisy when rains unless a sound -abatement material is installed.  This can be an expensive choice but will later 50-100 years.

•4)      Slate:  This is among the most expensive choices.  It is a time consuming installation process.  Its natural colors and textures make it hard to beat aesthetically.  Mostly seem on your high-end homes.  It will last 50+ years.

•5)      Wood Shakes and shingles:  These are natural materials which look good on any style home.  They will last 50+ years however you must treat them for fire prevention.  These roofs can be pricey upwardly to slate.

Our roof is a combo of concrete tiles and rolled roof (flat) - do you not see a lot of rolled roofs in Prescott....?

Cody and Anne, good information... Many people do not realize they have alternatives to asphalt shingles.
