A couple of families I know, as well as a lot of friends and classmates, are celebrating the most recent achievements of DANIEL NORRIS and PAUL HOILMAN. Not being much into sports myself, I'm better acquainted with the mothers, Melanie Norris and Luanne Hoilman, and Daniel's sisters, than with the sports heroes.
Both young men are fine examples and a credit to their families in many ways in addition to their athletic accomplishments. I used to save clippings, but there have been so many broken records and awards that I gave up.
DANIEL NORRIS, was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays, 74th pick of the Major League Baseball draft. He was as high as 13th on the first day. The Johnson City Press said on Wednesday, "He can go to Clemson and probably contend for a national title in the next couple of years or he can sign a pretty fat bonus check and start professional baseball....I'm sure he'd probably lead CLemson to a national championship, as talented a player ashe is.. It'll be a win-win for him." Daniel is a Senior at Science Hill High School.
PAUL HOILMAN, a Senior at East Tennessee State U and graduate of Science Hill, was named Atlantic Sun Athlete of the year for the second consecutive year. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. The Post said of Paul, "He finishes his career with the ETSU records for home runs, doubles, RBIs, runs, walks, total bases and hits." Coach Skole said "Honestly, I don't ever recall him ever having a bad day. Dave Mullins, ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, described Paul as "an All-American on the field, an honor student in the classroom and a selfless volunteer in the community."
The list of honors and accomplishments for both these young men would be too long - if you know them, you've been seeing all this for months.
