Douglas Pop Warner Little Scholars Awards Three Scholarships to Graduating Seniors in Carson Valley
The Douglas Pop Warner Board of Directors recently awarded their 2011 Scholarships. DPW gives two $1,000 scholarships to graduating Seniors that played Pop Warner primarily based on their essay on the topic "What Pop Warner meant to me." According to President, Jim Valentine, this year the candidates were of such quality that the Board decided to award a third $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship recipients are Douglas High seniors Adrian Romanowitz, Dillon Spates and Ben Reed.
Dillon Spates, award winning football player, state wrestling champion, and recipient of a four year scholarship to Waldorf College for wrestling, stated in his essay, "I would definitely not be the tiger I am today if it wasn't for the Pop Warner program." He went on to say, "If it weren't for Pop Warner I could not have accomplished these tasks because I learned how to work hard, commit to excellence, and buy in to everything I do which really paid off." He summarized with, "So I want to thank all of those coaches, dads, and moms who put all the grueling hours in to the program to make Douglas a better community, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish anything if it wasn't for them."
Adrian Romanowitz cheered at eight years old, had an older brother that played football, and a younger brother currently playing in the program. She remembered, "It was an exciting experience for me, and my family always supported me at every game I cheered at."
Ben Reed, recognized as Honorable Mention Region player for his Douglas High football play this season, had this to say, "Pop Warner is a jump start to real life, where you can learn valuable lessons while competing and playing the great game of football. Pop Warner football has helped sculpt me in to the young man I am today, and has had one of the biggest impacts on my young life." He continued, "You also learn that certain commitments in life require time and effort to be positive. Every coach I had emphasized one important philosophy: Family, school, football." Finally, "In conclusion, playing Pop Warner was one of the most positive and fun experiences I have ever had. Football is a game of dedication, discipline, responsibility, and hard work. ... In essence, Pop Warner means a lot to me, because my character relied upon it to develop into a respectable young man."
Scholastics is a major part of Pop Warner Little Scholars, the parent Pop Warner organization. Athletes must prove scholastic fitness to participate, and those that excel scholastically are recognized at Regional and National award dinners as All American scholars. The Pop Warner athlete is well rounded due to the emphasis on scholastics as well as the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment, discipline, integrity imparted in them by their coachers. No doubt they are being well prepared for a happy life as contributing members of society as reflected in the reflections of past-participants above.
