I don't think we need to wait only till November here in the U.S., October in Canada, to set aside a day of Thanksgiving for reflection. Many parents around the dinner table ask their youngsters what they learned for the day. Well maybe we should think about that count your blessings prior to dozing off to sleep each night for that day. The count your blessings phrase is a good one but kind of falls into that cliche too often. I prefer
All Good Things In Life Are Gifts.
Think of someone handing you a gift. Not only a surprise but feelings of happiness you get too.
It may be your restored health and healing, financial good fortune, the gift of faith, and most important the gift of PEOPLE. They have to be near the very top of the list. Their gift of a kind word, smiles, their time, energy and caring put into your life.
The gift of people is a fleeting one. You know what they say that the interaction can be for a reason, season, or lifetime.
I think it hurts us when someone comes into our life with that caring, but then due to circumstances, maybe they died or moved away and you never got their contact information, but their presence from that day, the weeks, or months left an imprint on you. THAT FEELING, that RESIDUE of love they left behind, lets you know they were a gift to you.
So reflect once a day looking back on each day. Look for those gifts. Maybe it was just a nice weather day, or playing catch with the ball with your dog or teasing your cat. It could have been something recreational or riding a horse on a trail. Maybe it was some unexpected affection from your significant other or some humor or a look or some loving words exchanged with a budding romance. Maybe a child's hug. WHATEVER it was, make note of it in your mind for that day, especially the people ones. SEE what gifts you were given for that day. KNOW that they were gifts and all designed especially for you that you deserve, to capture as much happiness as you can in life. Do not take them for granted. And know in parallel there is karma in the universe OTHERS are receiving the gift of you as you reach out to them with all that you are.
