ALAMEDA PARKS - KRUSI PARK

ALAMEDA PARKS - KRUSI PARK  The land that Krusi Park is found now was once a marshland on the Bay.  The Krusi family gave the land to the city of Alameda in the 1937.  It opened during the Second World War but wasn't completed until the late 1950's.  The city named the park land in honor of the Krusi family in 1938.

Ida and Hermann Krusi were local philanthropists and were champions of a park in the vicinity of the south shoreline area.  They made a large donation to the city of Alameda to an unemployment relief fund during the depression.  Mrs. Krusi belonged to a pioneering Alameda family, the Clawiters.  Hermann Krusi was a expert in dredging and harbor construction.  He oversaw the excavation which turned the Alameda peninsula into an island.

In 1954 a master plan was created to redevelop Krusi Park.  New ball fields, tennis courts, play areas and picnic area and a small recreation building were built on the site.  A children's area was dedicated as the "Ida Krusi Memorial Tiny Tot Area."  At the same time a new school, Otis School, was recently open at an adjoining site.

Krusi Park is a busy park where adults and kids play ball, use the play equipment and picnick.  A recent addition to Krusi Park is a boulder with a plaque commemorating the 1985 Babe Ruth World Series Champs, an Alameda team whose home field was Krusi Park.

One of the really nice things about living in Alameda are the various parks all over the island so that no one is far from a recreational park. I live across Little John Park. And I love the fact that it's such a happy place where people play softball, have picnics. etc. From time to time the Coast Guard men (I believe they're Coast Guard) play soccer for exercise.

I understand it used to be the parking lot for Del Monte Cannery at one time. Glad it's a park! Love the view from my front door.

Pacita:

I am going to have to visit Littlejohn park more often.  Yea, I head that too.  Nice that you can enjoy the park from you home.  Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the great photos and historical documentation of Krusi Park in Alameda California!!!  The map, the photo of the entrance monument and the picture of the play equipment brings it to life.

Evelyn, parks in and around neighborhoods certainly are important to most families when making decisions on a home purchase.   Great info for for Alameda!

Stephen:  Thanks you so much for your kind comments about my blog on a local park.  I appreciate your taking the time to stop by.

Joan:  I know local posts are not very interesting to most ActiveRainers and I appreciate your comments.  That's the problem with localism posts.  But I am concentrating on them right now.  Hope your weekend is good.

Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for the history of Krusi Park. Did you research the history for this post, or did you already know it?  I need to do Saratoga Parks, and other local stuff.

With so many CA State Parks closing, City and County parks may get more visitors.

Lloyd:

I belong to several historical groups in Alameda.  But fortunately for me, a friend who has a long history in Alameda wrote a book about all the parks in Alameda.  So his book and the Alameda Historical Society are my references.  There may be an historical society in Saratoga.  Good luck in your research.

I can't agree with you more.  Our parks are suffering because of cut backs the city is making.  Hope you had a fun and productive weekend.
