"What do you wish you could change about the real estate industry? - TEXAS REALTOR MAGAZINE

By
Real Estate Agent with Bill Cherry, Realtor 0124242

Texas Realtor is a monthly magazine published by Texas Association of Realtors for those of us who are members.

This month the magazine queried six members, five women and one man.  The question was this:

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY?

Four of the six said that licensing and membership need to require more education and be more difficult to obtain.

It is not in the personal interest of the management of Realtor associations or the state licensing offices to take steps to make membership and licensing more difficult.  To the contrary.  Increasing numbers of members increases the employment worth of those who are paid to operate the associations and the licensing offices.

It has always been an irony that this profession continues to make it easy to increase the competition, especially at the risk of those who are skilled.

Until educated, professional real estate brokers and agents put their collective feet down and demand reform, how those four people answered the question will be of no consequence.

Bill, I think the exams and stuff we have to learn should put us in a good position to practise. ( at least here in Georgia) I think the problem is that 2/3rds of the stuff we have to learn is %^%%. In Georgia they changed the brokerage exam from mystical choice to events and scenarios. This was done the year I took the brokers exam. I cannot tell you how many failed. So learning by wrote is not the way to go and simulations are a lot better to give practical experience.

I know I sat and listened during my last cram class combined with agents, where the instructor was talking about who the day of the closing belonged to for Hazard insurance. Me and another broker candidate turned to each other almost at the same time and said you know I'll take the $2.36 out of my pocket and pay it if it is a mistake. So what we learn is the problem not the amount we have to learn

Charlie, that's all so interesting.

I've been tripping over untrained agents and brokers for years, so I'm pretty biased.

Further, I know of no other profession that encourages competition, and makes it so easy for those people to become eligible to compete.
