Desert Spiny Lizard: Mike in Tucson, AZ mortgage lender

This big male (11 inches overall) Desert Spiny Lizard has been a resident of our back yard for the past three years.  He likes to climb up to a sunny place and warm himself in the morning sun.

Spiny Lizards have the ability to change their color so that they are darker when it is cooler. The darker color allows them to absorb more of the sun's rays and warm themselves more quickly.

We appreciate this guy; he makes his living eating spiders and other insects!

Barbara,

Thanks for being the first to comment!  When you consider that we have tarantulas here in the Sonoran Desert, it's easy to get used to something that eats them.  :)

Mike, I used to love catching lizards when I was a kid.  I am sure that it wasn't much fun for the lizards, but it was fun for me.  You did a great job capturing the lizard in these photos!

Darcy,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.  When I was a kid in South America, we regularly saw lizards four and five feet long.  They're harder to catch...

Mike,

Good to see you.

That's a neat trick changing colors to control their body heat.

I say one smart lizard, makes me belive a little green one might be able to sell insurance.  8>))

Mike, I have to admit to an aversion to such creatures.  However, that aside, those are remarkable photos.  (And, thanks!)

Mike, great catch, with the camera, that is.  Is this the lizard that looks like it's doing push ups?

Mike, As often as I have visited my parents I have never seen one of these guys.  I was going to say little but I don't think 11 inches quaifies as a little guy.  Our little gecko's are little.

Mike,

These look a lot like the iguanas we have running loose around here - bright green to mud brown. :)

Steve,

Iguanas are a lot larger, and (from personal experience as a kid in South America) very good to eat!

Marchel,

As a kid, we would regularly see lizards four and five feet long.  It's all in the perspective...  :)

Russell,

Welcome back!

Lou,

It's good to see you.

Gab,

That's the one.  ...and he's doing a Push Up in the second photo!

Juli,

This is the one!

Dale,

Glad to please, my friend!

Suzanne,

So I guess that if one got into your house...  LOL

Cara,

That's a GREAT shot!

Bill,

I took a break...  Thanks for stopping by!
