For years military installations across the US have offered the fellowship for the "wives" of active duty and retired military though the "wives" club. However today's military spouses aren't always "wives".
At Fort Belvoir there has been a name change to reflect the new status of the dependents of those eligible to participate in the Officers Wives Club. The new club name is the Officer Spouses Club. Though the club membership has been available to men for many years the name did not reflect the open door policy. Now it is official and the board members hope the name change will encourage men to feel comfortable coming to the OSC meetings.
The Belvoir Officer Spouses Club offers a variety of activities throughout the year and looks to raise funds to support scholarships for military families. It's a nice sign of the times to see the name of the club changed to reflect and honor all of the spouses who support our military families. Now if we could just figure out a better name than "dependent", so my long ago rag tag group of "independent dependent wives" could come up with a new name too.
It is a change that was needed to reflect of the contribution of all service people and their spouses regardless of sex. I think it is great and for a change a GOOD change
Cindy, Yep, that word "dependent". Liz about had a fit the first time they demanded MY social security number was the only one that mattered for her to get anything on base.
Cindy, That's a nice change in names to the Officer Spouses Club, but that "dependent" word might be a little more challenging to change. Thanks for honoring Flag Day today and the Birthday of the US Army.
Whatever they call it, it stands strong for all those involved in a CALL TO ACTION!

Things have to change with the times.
Good luck success.

Interesting. This name change makes perfect sense though. I wonder how the membership has changed since the name change.
