When it Comes To Content Creation- JUST DO IT!

So, over the past week or so, there has been quite the conversation going on about what is considered good content.  The discussion began on Twitter, and then moved over to a blog post by Rob Hahn, which brought out some really good discussion on the subject.  To sum up Rob’s 1,761 words his main point was this:

“Create content that you find compelling and forget everything else.”

While I get the point behind Rob’s post, I don’t necessarily agree with it 100% and here’s why:  Someone new to blogging doesn’t know where to start. I get the point of being yourself, writing about your passions & all, but when someone who is new to blogging, you aren’t going to start out by writing the best blog posts, creating the most awesome videos, and everything else.  You may have stuff of interest to you and that you are passionate about, which I think are great topics to do, but the fact is that when you are just starting out, you have yet to find your voice in creating that compelling and amazing stuff alone.  You content is hit or miss in the beginning.  Just like in baseball, you are happy to get home run caliber content once out of every fifty tries.

When I am out speaking to people on how to get started with blogging, I always share this:  Your first blogs will stink! The key is to just start. I then go on to tell them about one of my first posts I ever wrote.  To save everyone the trouble of trying to find it, I’ve pasted the post in it’s entirety below:

Hot Donuts Now!!!

This Morning while just flipping through some of the odd headlines that pop up when opening up aol, I started reading a story about 23 Retail Stores closing. I mean some of the ones on the list are kinda no brainers, but one that caught my eye was Krispy Kreme!!! What is this world coming to? Instead of closing them up, they need to just turn on the hot donuts signs more often!!! Luckily only 25 stores have closed so far. Hopefully someone in KK will read this post and take my advice!!!

94 Words of waste with twelve exclamation points. The post had absolutely nothing to do with the profession I was in at the time, it was simply just something interesting to me that I thought would make a good topic to write about.  If you go on to read many of the other posts that I wrote back at the beginning of my blogging career, they follow along the same lines of terribleness. Unlike many people that start blogging I just started doing it and put an effort into blogging no matter how bad I may realize those posts were in the beginning.  That first month I wrote 38 blog posts.  Of which maybe only 2 were worthwhile.  But, I did not quit, I had decided I was going to do this and would not give up.

After about 6 months, I finally started to get the hang of it and my efforts started paying off as new leads came my way, business started to grow, and my blog was starting to be recognized.  It wasn’t too long after that time that the local newspaper contacted me to write for them, major corporations contacted me for interviews, and my content was starting to be published on a national scale.  That real estate blog which I have not written anything on the subject of real estate in over two years still makes my phone ring to this day.  Now, my entire business model for 210 Consulting revolves around my blog and it is my main source of connections and leads.

The reason this has happened is that I took the same type of stance that Daniel Rothamel took in his response to the conversation with Rob and the others.  Daniel’s stance is this: In order for content to be considered good content, it actually has to be created. If I had not started with writing those first blog posts as terrible as they might have been, I would have never made it to the point I am today.  Finding your voice in your blog, video, or many other online avenues takes time for many.  But, if they never actually start and give it a try, then they will never achieve success.  The same is true for the person that starts it and gives up after only a few tries.  Like anything in life, it takes time and hard work.  I think what sums this up better than anything is a speech given by Art Williams:

So, don’t always worry about the compelling & amazing, just start creating content.  There is someone out there that will find your content interesting and you will make connections.  Trust me when I say this, I have seen some stuff that is just down right awful that has brought people business.  Everyone has their own opinion and you will connect with at least one person if the content is created for them to connect to.  Without the content it is virtually impossible to form those connections.

So, like Daniel said,

“There is one thing that ALL good content has in common–  it was actually created.  The only really bad content is the content that we never create. . .”

I tend to agree.  I would love your thoughts and comments.

So Inna, you would say then that your first blogs you ever wrote are as good as the ones you write today?

Jeremy - no, probably better than some and not as good as some others, but they are all still there, so by all means, feel free to look... I am pretty sure if nothing else, I had something to say, and they didn't quite suck.:-)

Marketing, Branding....Niche Markets....Don't you believe those would be a little more beneficial?

If Blogging is going to be an extention of your business.....you should include it in your business plan.

If Social Media is going to be an extention of your business....you should include it in your business plan.

Thowing stuff at the wall to see what sticks does not make business sense.

Sure...anyone's writing will improve over time. Just like everything else.

I'm with you. You just have to start. Not every blog is going to be a great work of art. What it will do is reflect who you are as a person.

I must also disagree. I believe that if you can't write at all and it is not something you will develop than you should choose to communicate in a different way such as with podcasts or with video. I have agents I coach and they will never blog and I would never suggest them to do so. They won't get hired that way. Some people are just not made to be writers.

What I think beginner bloggers can get away with is writing good content yet not know how to add an image or a video. That part is fine. The very first post on AR I wrote I did know how to bold or add images but I knew what I wanted to say. I had a plan. So while my first post was very simple and short-  it had a very important point that is still true today. I never changed my focus.

Blogging is writing. It is a very defined form of communication and not as forgiving as other mediums. For instance, if you can not write well and don't have a point it will come across authentic but without confidence. Seldom do you get hired for a lack of confidence.

This does not mean you have to be Hemingway- it means that even if you are not that great at the art of writing if you have a clear message, do your research, create a plan and then go for it, that will work.

Video is much more forgiving than writing because you can make goofy mistakes on purpose and be able to let your audience know that you are into raw content. That is the new craze. But writing is different. It is judged much differently by the reader. Katerina

Really?  It sounds like there's a little more behind the objections than just objecting to this post.  Lighten up people.

Let's change the topic from blogging to video.  There's a lot of similarities.  Getting someone started in video is a big challenge.  I don't like the way I look.  I don't like the way I sound.  It takes too long.  The excuses /objections go on and on.

The truth is, my first video sucked.  Guess what? So did the 2nd and 3rd.  Some might even say they still do.  Gary Vaynerchuck says his first 100 did.  If I tried and stopped at one, I'd be done.

Way back then someone told me "Just Do It".  I did.  We all have to start somewhere.

Yes it's also true some people shouldn't blog and some people shouldn't video but if they don't try, if they don't start, your higher than thou stance might have just silenced my next favorite blogger or video blogger of he future.  I'm not ok with that.

So you're worried about having to read substandard crap?  There's filters, there's unsubscribing, there's a thousands ways for you NOT to HAVE to read it.  Squashing the beginnings of a new person isn't one of them.  Please tell me you're smarter than that.

Mike @ #57 - if I may - I don't think a consumer is interested in filters, and that's the issue.  It's either a marketing or relationship building tool or it isn't and if it is, then I highly doubt crap will result in either business or relationships.

Then let the crap exist until they get better.  The public deals with crap all day long. They'll move on to find the good stuff, that's called free market enterprise. If the bloggers don't start somewhere there's nothing.

Hang on, I'm off to toss away my kids hockey skates.  Yeah I know he's just beginning but he can't stop a puck like Tim Thomas can.

Tammy (#55) - Exactly!  I think the problem is less one of quality than one of purpose.  If you're being you, right out of the box, I think you're off to a great start.  If you've got something of value to say, you should probably use your blog to say it.

What I disagree with is the "idea" that one should just start spitting out keywords or hot topicks.  That's a waste.

Mike - Really?  And what might that be?  LOL...  Just curious if you'd care to expand on (or clarify) that. Actually, it's just objecting to some of the ideas of the post, or more accurately, how SOME might take it.  I'd hope, for the sake of the community, that everyone would do the same if they came across something they didn't agree with.  At the end of the day, there's more than one way to skin this cat.  Best we talk about as many as possible, no?

@Mike,

I think that it is not about "Do not do it" as opposed to "Just do it". It is a simple truth that there are ways to learn, and the problem with "just do it" is that it comes in place "Just learn how to do it and do it". The learning side is sweat, and no sweat - no gain, and what is often behind "Just do it" is the advise to bypass sweat.

And this is the reason people ike it. Like they like winning a lottery.

Of course, they do it, but in real life how many did hit the jackpot.

The truth is that we need to sweat learn before popping it out for the world. yeah, there may be a few very talented people who would start great, but let us ask ourselves if we are the one.

My first posts were so bad that I later deleted them.  There was nothing there to even edit and improve.

I think better advice would be to read and learn from blogs right here.  Then start writing.  Maybe start with a picture with a few sentences about it.

Very interesting comments here .... seems like there is dissention on the topic.  Lots of gurus and advisors out there.

So what is the best answer and solution for these folks ?

Should they hire an advisor or guru ?  Block out the noise ?  Or just do it ?  Or do nothing at all and go about their business because everyone made it too confusing ?

Thanks for the comment Victoria.  I think that was the point that was being overlooked by some who commented.  Your stuff will get better with experience.  It's like the first time you go golfing, you can't expect to get a birdie on every hole.  In fact, you are probably happy if you break 100.  After a  few years you will be shooting much better.  You can sit & watch golf on TV, read books, even buy the best equipment.  But at some oint in time, you are going to have to walk out to the tee, stick your ball on the ground & take a swing at it.  Only then can you really start to hone your skills.

What amazes me is those who disagree with someone who disagrees- don't abide by the rules they impose on others. Calling names and speaking ill of others is not very becoming to the commenters who do that.

Thank you Jeremy for allowing dissenting opinions on your post and for allowing a vibrant discussion to take place. That is how we learn from one another.

Can't say the same thing for those who delete such comments on their own blogs.
