My ActiveRain blogging buddy Andrea created this fantastic post in honor of Flag Day.  Full of fun facts and information, it's worth the time to read so I am reblogging it here for your enjoyment.  Thanks, Andrea!

Flag Day New Milford CTWell, not really. June 14th is flag day. In honor of the day I went in search of information on our flag. We wave it proudly and often loudly, we sometimes don't exactly know how to care for the flag, and many of us are a bit on the ignorant side of our flags history.

Because I love vexillology, I did some research today on Old Glory.  I found some very interesting websites on the history of the American flag, complete with pictures of course.

Check out U.S. Flags by Vexillologist David Martucci. I was amazed at all the configurations of flags in our history.

Why June 14?

June 14, 1777, The Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States. Because no direction was given as to how many points the stars should have or where on the blue union they should appear, flags appeared in different configurations.

THE RESOLUTION

"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."

Did you know that in the Flag Code put out by the U.S. Government it assures condominium owners the right to fly a U.S. flag? They do think of everything, don't they?

"Sec. 3. RIGHT TO DISPLAY THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES."

"A condominium association, cooperative association, or residential real estate management association may not adopt or enforce any policy, or enter into any agreement, that would restrict or prevent a member of the association from displaying the flag of the United States on residential property within the association with respect to which such member has a separate ownership interest or a right to exclusive possession of use."

Ever have a question about the proper way to display the flag of the United States? Don't worry, you can read all about it, and more, in the code website put out by the United States government. Of course it is a bit on the hard to read side, so I found a much better website for you find out where, when and how to properly display the flag from none other than the Betsy Ross Homepage!

Flag Day, June 14, 2011. Fly your flags proudly, fly them correctly, and go out and kiss a vexillologist!
