After serving in the military, I can honestly say that I have personally become complacent regarding using my SS#. I used it for everything. I'm sure I am not alone. The identity stealers are having a hay-day out there because so much of our private information is out there for the taking. I'm not much for more government regulation, but I do believe we all need to take more personal responsibility for our information. Thanks for the post putting the security of the number back into perspective for me.
Hey, Jon! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites.
Have a great Sunday.
Kelly - and so often there is no justification for that. They just put the line in the form, and we dill it out
Patricia - thank you.
Hi everyone. After noticing that it is a common practice, I asked an attorney, and 3 local (one from Orlando) Title Companies whether there is a regulation or a law or a requirement for the cash buyer to give his/her SS#
The answer was "No". I wrote about it in How To Deal With Overactive CYA
I am one of those who is surprised that you took the stand you took, and I'm appreciative of the fact that you've written this. I will certainly be more cautious in the furture.
Virginia - I work with this investor and I know how difficult it is to make him give his SS# even when it is a legitimate request.
I just knew that he would ask me why they need it AFTER closing, and I did not have a reasonable answer.
Turned out they did not have it either, but this lady never had a problem getting this information, which was not needed.
Wow! That is crazy. SSN# is in the used by the lender and they are the only one who has it. I would not give it to anyone else.
Mike - I think it would be smart at least to question people when the demand it
Jon, what if they were foreign nationals and didn't have a social security number. Good job taking a stand, in spite of the bullying tactics.
Jeanne - good question. Are we not selling foreign nationals? Last time I checked we were selling to those, who can pay. thanks for bringing it up.
Jon, I really don't blame your buyer for not wanting to give the info out. Glad that they did away with the requirement so he could close.
Jon,
You do have to wonder at things we just automatically do. However, my husband is such a nut about our SS#'s, you've got to have a heck of a good reason to get it from me and then some!
All the best, Michelle
Jon I too am sick of people demanding my personal information and I have stopped giving it up if it can't be justified to my satisfaction. This goes for SS#, Crediti Card info, address, etc. Sometimes I just have to decide whether I can live without something or not.
Jon,
While I'm careful, I really don't mind most of the instances where I need to provide it. It really is the closest we have to a national ID card.
Jon - our title co. asks for a ton of personal information from the buyer claiming they use it for their title search. Hello??? The buyer doesn't own the subject property, how could their personal information aid in the title search of the property they are buying? I always tell the buyer if they want to use that piece of paper to start their next BBQ they can.
Judi - it was difficult. All it took was to say "No"
Michelle - I do not blame your husband. At least find out why they need that information. And if it is for (to better serve you in the future..." why not it is you to decide if you want it?
In Maryland the buyer selects the title company not the seller- I believe Fla is different. The ONLY person who needs the ss# is the lender.
Ellie - here in Florida except for 2 counties it is theSeller who pays buyer's title insurance, and they choose the Closing agent
