"In the year 2011....." A View From Afar

Thanks to J Phillip Farnada's post "Why It's Time To Get Rid Of Weiner" yesterday, I was compelled to write a comment from a very distant perspective...a piece on the way we, in this place called America, will be looked upon from a far and distant future:

"In the year 2011, there was an uprising; an uprising in a land called America. This uprising occured in a large city called New York, in a territory and state of the same name.

In this land called America, there were many people who loved their country so much that they wanted to keep it as it's founders had designed it:  It was a country of great freedoms and openess. So when this uprising occured, there was a great call to all who lived in this land to stand up to an increasing need to make sure that those freedoms were protected and that openess kept it's place within the People's lives!.

The uprising came into being because of one man---a man called Weiner, who did not think his private parts were something to be kept from the eyes of the People--in fact, he felt that his rights and freedoms included the NEED to reveal his most intimate parts, especially to his constituents, his supporters.

So, the uprising took place on the streets of New York; the crowds yelling at the top of their lungs: "Let Weiners Shine!--Let Weiners Shine!"....and the man who started this whole event became the Mayor of this great city in this great land. Let all who care to know, this land has not been found on any map since that great uprising--it has completely disappeared from the globe and the land called America is now among the lost lands and is now, like Atlantis, one of the great mysteries of the 21st century."

I'm just sayin'......

Funny, Paula, and a bit sad that our leaders take us to places like this. Like your word choice for Weiner's constituents...his supporters.

Glenn: Any word becomes potential fodder for making fun of Weiner, don't you think?....very sad, pathetic actually!

Margaret: I don't know but they are out there, apparently. He just may become the Mayor of New York; now that is a sad commentary in and of itself!

Mitchell: Sorry it took me a while to respond to your comment---I never got a notice that there was another comment!! Well I guess maybe that 's why they are doing more work on the system.....anyway, interesting if that is the case about Christine Quinn. Never heard of her but then again I have not been watching too closely. I will now ! It's the old stimulus, response action I guess and this is what we can expect when people like Anthony behave as they do!

Love this post...sad that many of his constituents saw nothing wrong or out of the norm in his actions.

Ana: That is what is so unbelievable about the whole affair! Have we come so far that we have lost sight of our own precious ability to feel shame and remorse? I say that because every time we turn around someone is doing something a little more risky; a little more "over the edge" and a little more de-humanizing. We are the only species that I know of to have a highly developed sense of modesty and humility...I think we may be losing it, unfortunately! It may just be our doom! As we lose that part of our humanity, we lose the place among living things that held us higher than other life-forms--that helped us to see our difference from lower forms of life...now, we have to either re-gain our dignity or lose it entirely!

unfortunately, as far as media is concerned anyway, there is the perception that all you have to do is apologize and everything is ok now, goes away...call your actions "inappropriate" never really admit to what it is you exactly did and then say "I am sorry".  The "I'm sorry" negates all, genuine remorse not necessary just apologize. We are becoming desensitized to disgusting behavior, especially in our public officials.

Ana: I think that is the biggest problem; there is an unrealistic idea that if someone does something and then "takes responsibility" just to get himself out of the situation, that all is forgiven and that is the extent of the negative response--Well it is not the end. Truly taking responsibility is an inner journey, and extrememly lonely if it is to be fully experienced and therefore completed--if this process does not happen, chances are that it, or something like it, will come up again, and again, and again......

I hear things like this on the news and have to wonder what ever happened to old fashioned common sense?

I do too and it seems we have lost our abiltiy to feel shame as a culture...too bad, in my humble opinion.
