Today is national eat your vegetable's day! I can think of no better way to celebrate this auspicious occasion than by providing an update on my own garden progress.
You may recall a previous blog of mine: "Vegetable Gardening in Fairfield County CT." In that blog I spoke of the harrowing tales of a pioneer family deep in the wilds of Wilton, CT. Attempting to subsist by living off the good graces of mother nature, due to the great distance to salvation and civilization: A full four miles to the nearest Stop and Shop. Gasp!! (I know).
People say: Surely you can't raise a family under such conditions. I reply: Don't call me Shirley, and fret not for we are of hearty stock. I can and I will.
A full month has passed and I am pleased to report that my family is still hanging on despite the hardships and reports of carnivorous, man eating creatures running amok in the nearby towns. While there is scant little in the way of produce to harvest, there is good progress in the growth of salad fixin's for later this summer. Take a look at those squash blossoms baby.
In a recent web article written on March 11, 2011, by Dana Dratch, titled: "9 items homebuyers desire", (I am not sure you can actually refer to some of these things as "items"), a few of them stood out.
1) They want a home in good condition. Who doesn't. So repair and prepare before you put yours on the market,
2) They want a smaller, less formal home. Small is this year's new big. McMansions are a bloated relic of a bygone era. Heating those fat floor plans ain't a good time anymore. A smaller house will afford you more open land to plow under and plant crops on.
3) They want outdoor activity spaces. What better outdoor activity than digging in the soil? Heck, now that you have the new fashionable tiny home, you will need to spend more time out of doors anyway. You may as well plant some potatoes and tomato's.
4) They want PRACTICAL GREEN FEATURES. What could be more practical and green than a food producing outdoor activity space that requires no fossil fuel? Plant that vegetable garden. Get ye to the local nursery, especially if you are planning to sell your home. You heard Ms. Dratch, these are things that a potential buyer wants.
