A gentleman showed up on my home doorstep the other night offering me a discount if I signed up right then for his quarterly pest control service. He was "doing work for a neighbor" and offered me a discount for not having to "travel back and forth to the office." Any time someone shows up like that and is wanting to sell me something, I'm always a bit skeptical whether the sales pitch is legit or not. Am I being scammed, or no?

A recent article on the CNN Money web site points out that home remodeling is a big business and along with it come less-than-honest people trying to make a quick buck off an unsuspecting homeowner. It reminds us to be wary of anything that sounds to good to be true and to do due diligence before agreeing to any work at any price.

This is the time of year when many people start to think about doing home projects big and small. If you fall into that category, beware. Don't risk your entire project because someone made you an offer you couldn't refuse.
