When we started Nucazza, we certainly felt like the "Lone Nut", however we are lucky enough to be on a hill, so we could witness as more and more nuts came rolling down to join.
Yes a leader needs guts, yet his whole point is that the first followers also need massive cojones and are undervalue'd in today's society. I can truly relate to both the nut and the nut that's first to follow. It feels great not to be only one.
So here we are. We live in a world where we have the leverage to make things happen, the desire to do work we believe in, and a marketplace that is begging us to be remarkable. Yet, in the middle of these changes, we still get stuck. Stuck following archaic rules. Stuck following 100 year old traditions. Stuck in an industry that not only avoids change but actively fights it. We are stuck in fear of what our industry partners will say, stuck in fear that change is bad, and stuck in fear of the old “What if”? The irony is that all of this fear used to be useful. Fear of change is built into most living things, because change is the first sign of risk. Today, that fear that used to protect us is now our common enemy, it’s the one thing standing in our way. Imagine if you worked for Alta Vista, K-Mart or a “BCD” mortgage broker; it may have been fun for a while, but it’s no fun at all when the Business fades. By challenging the status quo, a cadre of heretics is discovering that one person, just one, can make a huge difference!! Heretics are the new leaders. The ones who challenge the status quo, the ones who get out in front of the parade, the ones that create movement. The marketplace now rewards Heretics! The shift is bigger than you think.
