I lost my father when I was a toddler.  I still have a lone memory of sitting on his lap at the breakfast table.  Many other memories from my childhood have faded away.  I always wondered if this was a true memory or just the longing of a daughter for her dad.  When I grew older, my family verified that my father did have a habit of sitting at the table enjoying a hearty Sunday breakfast with me on his lap.  This memory is a blessing and helps him alive in my life.

In my teen years, family, neighbors and others who knew him said that I had my father's personality and looked so much like him.  They began to call me by his nickname.  For a while I got a kick out of it, but to be honest, it did get old quick.  I was ready to have my own identity and not be tethered to his.  From the many stories that people shared about my father I learned that although his still had his "day job" he had also ventured out to become an entrepreneur just before he died. In this way, I feel very much connected to him.  Now that I am building my real estate business, I often wonder what advice he would have for me as a fellow entrepreneur.

My father was not there to teach me the lessons of life directly.  But he still managed to do so as I got to see his life through the memories of others.  I am honored to be his daughter.  So as I have my Sunday morning breakfast, and think back to those precious days of sitting on his lap, I lift a toast of orange juice to my own father and all fathers on your special day.

Happy Father's Day everyone!
