Blog Update to the post on 6/8/2011: Maui Planning Commission to Hear Short Term Rental Bill

The Maui Planning Commission has unanimously voted to recommend the passage of a bill to regulate short term rentals in residentially zoned areas.  The Bill will now be heard by the County Council.

There has been increasing demand for home rentals, particularly in oceanfront and resort communities.  For example, the small town of Paia, which has few rental options, relies on rentals of homes during the surfing season to keep its economy healthy.  In other areas, luxury rentals are in demand with visitors seeking privacy and a more intimate vacation experience.  Hopefully, through this bill the county will find a way to regulate the existing rentals, creating economic benefit to the county through taxes and increased visitor spending, without disrupting the communities in which the rentals are operated.
