Stan, when I was 21 years old I bought a 1000 Kawasaki.
I lived in Arizona, which was fairly undeveloped and underpopulated at that time. We rode at 100MPH+ routinely.
Helmets? No way, unless it was really cold.
Thank God that on one really cold day, I put the Helmet on. A girl in a full-sized car turned left in front of me. The Bike was not quite totalled as it the front corner of her car; I went over her hood and landed on the curb. The Helmet was gouged down to the core. But I walked away. A few weeks later the Scooter was fixed, and I rode again.
A few months after that, somebody came into our Apartment Complex and stole Four 1000-Class Motorcycles, including mine. I blew the insurance check on something else.
That was my one and only Motorcycle... I have ridden some 250cc Dirt Bikes since then, but no more Big Bikes.
Thanks for bringing back good memories!
Stan,
Here in NC we have helmet laws, BUT South Carolina doesn't - Last year I understand SC implemented helmet law & not many showed up for Bike Week -- this year they changed the law back in order to get all the business that comes from Bike Week ... hmmm.... safety vs. $$$
