Chandeliers...the superstar of light.

crystal chandelierYou may know me as a confessed lampaholic but lately I have been on a chandelier kick.  In staging we always talk about how important lighting is when presenting a home for sale and how it’s just plain important for everyday living. Lighting is the one feature of a home that can lift it up or bring it down.

Nothing says luxury more.  Chandeliers are not just for dining rooms and entry ways.  Modern, contemporary or traditional, they're a fixture that impacts a room. Today's design trends include them in places like master baths or master bedrooms.  Think of hanging a mini chandelier in little side sitting areas or reading rooms. You can really snaz up a boring apartment bedroom by switching out the existing fixture, go on...you can always take it with you when you leave.

You can find chandeliers that look great at very affordable prices….no excuses.  If you are wanting to update your current fixture and if the proportions are right for the room, you can easily change the look by painting and adding, changing or removing shades and sconce covers.

Take in to consideration the finishes going on in the room and choose accordingly.  You don’t need to match exactly…difference and mild contrast is interesting.  Many homes have combined living room and dining room areas so the lighting finishes should compliment not clash.

foyer chandelierFrame them properly.  This means correct proportions are a must.  In a foyer you can figure what size you need by the dimensions of the space; add the width and length of the area. This will give you the diameter of the fixture to choose.  If you have a tall or transom foyer make sure the light is hung centered and visible through the window.  Don’t go squat, if the space is tall and open the fixture should have some height also.

twin chandeliersIn closed in dining areas, a well placed mirror will reflect the beauty and light of your superstar. The fixture should be about half the width of the table hanging 30 to 36 inches above depending on how tall the ceilings are.  You don’t want to hang it so low that it’s in the way of your beautiful candelabra or table accessories, or as I have seen way too often, you almost can’t see the person on the other side of the table …it drives me crazy! If your electrician or handy man is arguing with you about this hand him the phone... have him call me please!

I came across this link where you will find more great tips and information about installation of chandeliers and style.  Happy hanging!

Ana, Great topic to discuss. I love them and have them in my bedroom and in the living area since we don't care much about the fan. Usually I suggest the chandelier for re-design projects. I also had one project where it was not possible expensive to run electric cord to the  dining area and we suggested to install candelabra.

Hi Anna,

What a great idea and it turned out great!  Your picture is a perfect example of how a fixture like that can really make a room special no matter how small the space, it really defines an area.

Ana, I have another tip from my own experience. For the new bedrooms it is better to hook up the chandelier first and than move in and assemble the bed because it is absolutely uncomfortable to stand on the mattress or unsafe to put anything to stand on the bed ;-)

Ana, although I've never given it much thought, I do agree...chandeliers can make or break a room or living space.  I think it adds an element of style, class, elegance or whatever you want to call it that's tough to beat...if done right.

Ana -- your tips here on chandeliers is invaluable info for homeowners -- thanks so much for sharing it!  I have the same pet peeve when I see them hung either too high or too low above a dining table -- 30 to 36" is just right.

I love this post!  I'm a fellow lampaholic and light fixtures are something I always set my sights on during consults.  You should have seen the expression on the seller's and the agent's face when I suggested a small chandelier for this bath...

bath after it was installed, they loved it!

My mom loved chandeliers, but as she got older, she decided that she didn’t want to clean them anymore. After listening to her clean them for so many years, I was pretty sure that if I had chandeliers they would be simple ones, not those ones with a million light bulbs and two million beads and strings.

Hi Jim, I did forget to mention that you must always keep them clean!  That's the downside if you find a piece with lots of little parts to dust:)....sigh..... still worth it!

Hi Ana --- the impact of proper lighting in and outside the home is so important.  When utilized properly it can create drama, definition and division of rooms/places.  Very nice post.

Thank yu Michael.  I see so many dark houses on consults, lighting does make such a difference even just replacing a burnt out bulb:)
