My Travels in Real Estate, An Occasional Series. This is the first in this series of travels in Real Estate.

Stalin was on a rampage through the USSR making his way rather quickly to the Baltic countries of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. His killing spree had gone largely unnoticed by western countries or perhaps more accurately they turned a blind eye. As his troops approached Latvia my family was preparing a daring escape.

My family owned a lot of land in Latvia as native Latvians. They owned farmland in Zemgale, property in Riga, a paper factory and a railroad and a beautiful beach house in Jurmala, about a half hour drive from Riga, the capital of Latvia. Needless to say my family was a very successful and prosperous family of entrepreneurs which placed them on Stalin's enemy of the state list. Kill the wealthy, steal their land was his Method of Operation.

Jurmala Latvia land ownership

The patriarch of our family, my great grandfather gathered his wife, brothers, my grandmother and her brother, my mother and her brother on a boat and escaped to a refugee camp in Germany where they would live for the next 5 years until they could find a sponsor in the United States so they could immigrate here.

Sidebar: It was not so easy to immigrate here after WWII as it is today. You had to have a sponsor and many other things had to get done before you were allowed into the United States.

Prior to escaping out of their own country my great grandfather who had a lot of money contacted the United States state department to see if he could place his money in a U.S. bank and if it would be safe there. He was assured that this was a good move on his part. So he placed all the family's money into a bank in New York. Many Latvians placed money either in Australian, American or Swedish banks. Well, Franklin Roosevelt gave all of that money to Stalin in that stupid pact he made with Stalin so when my family arrived they discovered all of their money was gone. All the land was stolen and then the money was gone.

When Ronald Reagan pushed to tear down the Iron Curtain, Latvia was the first USSR country to claim its' dependence from the Soviet Union. The law in Latvia stated that upon independence all the land would revert back to the owners prior to communism. My mother was not alive for this, but her mother was. Her mother inherited all the land back. My grandmother died when she was 97 just a couple of years ago and thus my siblings and I inherited the land. Now we are in the process of finding parcels and such.

We did get our beach front property in Jurmala. (In Latvian, the J is pronounced as a Y) My grandmother had the deed to that property. But also when the Iron Curtain fell, crime became rampant all over Latvia and the rest of that part of the world. Russian mobs took over most of the courts and judges. Blackmail and bribing became everyday business. The is a group of mobsters who started a very lucrative criminal business of finding out what properties belonged to Latvians in the United States that are elderly, forge their wills and bear false witness to steal the land away for the second time!

My grandmother was one of the people they decided to steal from. Now my siblings and I are in a court battle in Latvia trying to beat these criminals. In Latvia, we have the burden of proof that the we are the heirs and that my grandmother did not disinherit us and give this land to these crooks. We have been defending our rights to our land for 2 years now and we will be in court for another 2 years before this is resolved in our favor. Since the crime was actually committed in the United States and we just found out where these false witnesses are my brother who is an attorney is getting charges pressed against them and that is about as much as I am liberty to discuss about the case until it is over. We are determined to set an example of these crooks so that other innocent Latvian elderly and their descendants are not taking advantage of any longer.

Here are some photos of our Beach Front property. It is called beach front in Jurmala as this is the closest you can own land by the beach.

Jurmala land belonging to our family On the way to beach Jurmala Latvia

Jurmala is a small peninsula of land that is a small strip like Palm Beach Island is here in South Florida. The Latvians are very conscious about environmental issues and thus they will not allow condos to be built along the water. There is a peaceful nature preserve that buffers the beach with many trees which are not allowed to be cut down. They understand that the trees produce clean air and thus they protect the trees. Latvian tradition celebrates the tree in folklore and such.

Jurmala latvia beach in front of our property Jurmala beach latvia in front of our property

Our property is right behind the tree preserve and there is a walking trail right to the beach which is less than a 5 minute walk. In this area this property is worth over 2 Million USD and although the Real Estate market has cooled there somewhat this part of Jurmala will always be attractive to wealthy Russians who look to have a summer house or a place safe for their families to live while the husband goes to work in Russia and comes home on the weekends.

Jurmala Latvia land ownership Tree preserve on beach jurmala latvia

Jurmala is very beautiful in the summer and fall. The winters are very cold but dry and the spring is very rainy. It is on the Baltic Sea and one of my mother's fondest memories was that of searching for Amber along the beach. You will find the most detailed and colorful amber in the Baltics. I hope you enjoyed this post about Travels in Real Estate. I was inspired to write this series on Stephanie Edwards suggestion.

Hi Katerina,  What an interesting story!  Are the courts and judges still so bad?  It must be so frustrating for you.  Hopefully the crooks will land in jail for a long time.

Nestor & Katerina, all I can say is "go for it" you deserve to have all your family land back.  People do not understand how this can happen being safe and secure here in the US.  My descendent's had similar issues without the paperwork to create a trail of redemption.  Thanks for sharing and up date us as you proceed with what information you are allowed to share.  Great Post.

Wow, Katerina!  What a fascinating family history you have!  I love stories like this.  Those were beautiful pictures.  I am shocked that Roosevelt gave money that belonged to private citizens to Stalin!  I am so sorry about what everybody has been through and I hope that those crooks get what they deserve!  Thanks so much for your story.

Katerina, I love you story!  The Latvian Embassy is down the street from my  house, and for decades there was this one little old man running the show and working for a free Latvia.  At first, they did not call it an embassy, but as soon as Latvia became independent, it got embassy status, including special parking spaces on the street!

That part of the story that really go me going was when Roosevelt gave your family's money to Stalin!  Yikes!

Katerina,

I have heard many stories from my grandmother about escaping from Latvia and living in concentration camps.  My family lost a lot during that time.  My grandmother even lost a son in the war, not knowing if he was a POW or MIA.  Hope you regain the property.  It looks gorgeous!

What a fascinating story - you know, you could actually write a book on it! There are so many people over here that have land in Europe that was stolen by the Communists - my (last) x-husband's family has a lot of property in Greece that they would love to get back! But that is another story -

My Grandmother sponsored her nephew to come to the States many years ago! I remember hearing stories of it while I was growing up -

And about 20 years ago a relative in the Slovak Republic wrote asking that we prepare a document relinquishing my Grandmother's claim to part of her parent's home in Krizovany (east of Bratislava) so that relatives over there could take possession of it - since we have no use for the home or land around it, we did just that. It is still in the family -

Sally- We do have a wonderful heritage and I was fortunate to be interested in all of this family history as I was growing up. I would sit and listen for hours as my mother, her mother and her parents would tell the stories of this rich heritage. You hear about Norway as the home of Vikings but actually Latvia was also Viking land. I used to have audio tapes of all the stories that they spoke to me on but my X let them all burn in a fire when we were separated so much of what I know is what I remember in my head. Thanks for learning more about me. Katerina

Patricia- Thanks! I loved writing this post. I am so excited to know you know about Latvia and that the embassy is right down the street from your house, how cool is that! I am going to have to visit you and go there! Latvians are an amazing people who fight for their independence always, all throughout history. Since they have such a great geo location, they were always looked at as a country to invade. Nestor is Cuban and as you know the U.S had to betray their country too, so we both have similar stuff in regards to government! My brother was searching archived laws to see if there is a remedy about Roosevelt's actions. It appalled me to learn of that. Especially giving it to the communists. My mother had to fight for her right to stay here in U.S., because Stalin and his predecessors wanted her sent to Siberia, they claimed her as a USSR citizen because she wrote anti Stalin poetry and it was spread on the black market in Latvia. Katerina - what a battle. You know, that I had relatives (uncle and aunt) in Riga during the Soviet regime. They used to rent a house in Jurmala, and I visited them several times there. I remember thinking, that i did not like being on the beach, but not going in the water because it was too cold. I still have amber from that time. My grandma was from Lithuania, but they were all dirt poor, nothing I can claim to inherit now. The corruption in the former Soviet republics seems rampant everywhere. Good luck with your case. If you win in Jurmala -can I come and visit?

Interestingly, in the summer of '93, I helped to care for a ballet team of young girls from the Soviet Union. (They were performing in the US.) Many of them were from Latvia. Katerina, I just knew you were a princess. I certainly hope everybody lives happily ever after.

More people need to understand the treachery of FDR conspiring with "Uncle Joe" Stalin. The whole "Iron curtain" thing was unnecessary and abjectly cruel to Eastern Europe. The US "stalled" outside of Berlin to allow the Soviets enough time to get there first because of a previous "deal" between FDR and Stalin.

It really grieves me to hear people speak lovingly about FDR when we know what a deceitful and dishonest man he really was.

I'm happy for your family getting a chance to recover some of your property in Latvia, but I know you'll be fine even if you don't get it back.

The stories like yours -- now emerging some 60 years post -- are what I am most intrigued with. It is unfortunate how long the effects of war continue after the peace. It is unfortunate you are now embroiled in a battle to finally recieve that which belongs to your family. Also unfortunate is that your mother could not enjoy it again during her lifetime.

There is one thing that I do not get. Your family got on a boat and went to Germany? Germany was a participant in Molotov/Ribbentrop Act, that established what Hitler gets (part of Poland, Silesia, etc.) and what Stalin got (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland, which Stalin just did not take). You, obviously, do not like Stalin and neither do I. I am just surprised that the family went to Germany, which was in the midst of the war. Refugee camps in Germany? Never heard of those.

Katerina, you were born in the US? This is the family history that you know from your parents?

My elder brother's father (we have different fathers) and realtives lived in Riga, and before Russia occupied Latvia they were quite wealthy people. Some of them also ended up in Germany, but not as refugees. As Jews they were sent to concentration camps, and perished there. My brother's dad disappeared during the war, his parents died, they had properties there, but I do not think anyone would even thought of going and trying to get something back. My brother (his son) wouldn't. iI am really surprised that I never ever thought about it this way. What a difference it makes growing up here. Our slavery is still with us. I am happy I am out, and my brother is happy that he is out, and it never occurred to see things differently. Until your blog.

It will be a sleepless night

But my family was Latvian not Jewish Latvians. They were blonde and blue eyed. They were told to go to Germany and from there they could come to U.S.  My Battery is running out, I will continue tomorrow...

Jon Zolsky

Jon-  I don't have time to look up the exact dates. But it was towards the end of the war when this was all going on. There was also an agreement with FDR, although I don't know the names of all these agreements. I just know my family did not like them and was affected by these treaties and agreements. The Americans set up refugee camps in Germany. My family lived in one for 5 years. They are not lying to me. I am a first generation born American. My mother was like 10 years old or so. My grandmother and her parents told me the stories first hand, so it was not just my mother. There is a very large Latvian community in Washington state, and most all o of those people told us the same story. Some came through Canada to get here, some of our relatives stayed in Germany and some went to France, some went to Australia. And now some are going back to Latvia.  The fact is that Hitler made that agreement with Stalin but he did not always keep his agreements and either did Stalin for that matter. I am very sorry about what your family went through as Jews during this horrible time in history.  The biggest difference is the fact that your family were Jews and we were not. My family all has blue eyes and blonde hair, just the sort of people that Hitler actually admired. It is a disgusting thing to talk about and I would have privately messaged you about this part but then again, I thought, this is the way it was and even though it is horrendous and inhumane, it is history and is there for us to all learn not to make the same mistakes again.

All land in Latvia reverted back to the original private ownership, which actually was a law that was put in effect when they knew Stalin would be taking all the land.

Do you have any family left?

Very interesting.......I personally know many people that are in the same situation in other Eastern European Countries.  The Russians did indeed do many "nasty" things, and the Russian Mafia is still doing them. Stealing the land twice......that ticks me off, but doesn't surprise me.  I am glad you are fighting them, the corrupt system, and taking a stand.

It would surprise many Americans what actually occurred during the war, and I know of another country over there that is still having problems from our President and England's Prime Minister deciding to divide it up.....now that also ticks me off.....what gives us the right to divide up another country?  Anyway, I enjoyed your story a lot.

Kathy- It is all about power and greed. We are supposed to be the great defenders of freedom and yet FDR supported Stalin and his regime. Nestor is from Cuba and that whole Castro thing was another fiasco. It sickens me but the only thing we can do now is to move on. The Russion Mafia scares me and I am just glad that we have a heavy weight well known attorney in Latvia who they won't kill.  A life in Latvia is only worth about $25,000. But it is getting better. They put a bunch of bad judges in jail, corrupt police in jail and now they have a new task force to investigate corruption in government. Katerina

Latvia and all the surrounding Baltic Countries had the same experiences...and who honestly believed that once the Communist Regime left that they didn't leave people in power?  Look at Hungry last year..still uncovering the corruption, and Romania.........some just "act" like they are more democratic, but most of it doesn't filter down to the "people".  Power and Greed, that is so true.

When America bombed Pristina...I was amazed at all the regular people that were crying, and fearful that the Russians would come back....they suffered deeply during the war, and were afraid that they would be invaded again.  The R. Mafia is scary, and many of them seem to have migrated here, and all the other "desirable" spots in the world.  So, they buy homes, fancy yauhts, and live the life of luxury.....all from corruption, theft, and murder.  unbelievable.....but true.

Wealthy....ummm and the money came from where?????

Thanks,

Do not get me wrong, I am curious. Now I get it. I know that Americans had camps, I just did not make the link, and, of course, that should have been the very end of the war.

You see, it was strange back there in Russia. My mom was trying to keep this all secret and never spoke about it, she was afraid that this could somehow hurt us. You did not want to have the past like that in Russia when I was a kid, someone rich ("kulak" how Russians called it, and all kids hated Kulaks, they were ugly greedy monsters familiar from the movies). So the history was mute. My mom did not even ever told me the details of how my grandparents perished in the Ukraine in 1941, because she was afraid of it. And I can't say that she was timid or shy, no. She was a bright medical doctor, very outgoing. She was trying to protect us. Knowledge could be dangerous. So, we were growing up oblivious to our own history.

That's unfortunate.

I have relatives in Israel, and in other former Soviet republics. The family fared better than many others during the Stalin era. We were supposed to die (according to the documents that I have read after immigrating to US), were packed and ready for the Great Exile in 1953, but Staling died suddenly, and it did not happen.

I wish you the best. You inspired me to write about it. I was holding it inside for too long. Thank you.

I just read Jon's comment...and I met many people that were thrown into Prison for talking about things....also some parents who did exactly what his mother did....there were so many spy's, and snitches for the regime, in whatever country, that you didn't know who to trust...I hope you (Jon) do get it out....and that everyone doesn't keep a blind eye.  Look at the propaganda currently over there....same ole stuff...history, I hope not repeating itself.

Jon- You need to talk about it, that helps the healing process of this horrible time in history. My mother was very outspoken and was an artist. I am writing about her this week or next, so read her story and you will see what her purpose was. Latvians are very independent. They have been fighting for independence through out their history, it was Germany, Poland, Russia. They somehow maintained a love of their freedom.

I am glad you made it out. Your mother was trying to protect you in her way. But we find out later that those secrets need to be talked about.

It is the saddest that that communists, socialists and even American media and Hollywood all portray rich people as horrible people, that is so far from the truth. My family did great things in Latvia, they employed people, they took care of the poor and the peasants, they allowed sharecroppers on their land. Even here in U.S.; rich people help with more charities than poor people do. There is much good you can do with money used for a righteous purpose.

I wish you the best also. Katerina

Kathy- Sounds like you are very compassionate about this subject. The propaganda abounds. It lives on. It is disgusting. I am writing about my mother this week or next and you will get more insight. Thank you so much for sharing your feelings about this subject. Katerina

Katerina-  Yes, I am.....and I subscribed to your blog just so I wouldn't miss the Post on your mother.  As to this Post I found it very interesting....I know, and taught some of this stuff to Americans going into Romania. Many of my best teachers were the ones that were thrown into Prison, and the ones that experienced it firsthand, as with you and your family. Currently I have a few friends affected by the law giving property back.....I truly know how long a struggle yours is :)  And again I say good for you :)

Hungarians, Poles, Gypsies, Czechs, Ukrainians, Moldova, and a few from Bulgaria.  My son went to High school in Germany so that gave me a different perspective.....I have met many people from all over the world, and the stories have always intrigued me.

My mother loved Gypsies. They were exterminated by Hitler before the Jews were but you don't hear about that much. Katerina

I learned about it while I lived over there, and you're right, it isn't talked about much. Romania sent many Gypsies to the camps, then tried to deny it, but later couldn't.  They were persecuted even more than the Jews, but again not much is recorded.  Personal stories abound though...like in old times the oral histories help us remember.

In the Jewish Quarter in Prague they had an exhibition of children's art from the camps, and they told some of the story of the Gypsies......and one of my teachers told me a lot of the History....Transylvania is full of Gypsies, and I have some of the most wonderful pictures of the colorful clothing, camps, etc.

I really think I got the best education living there for so many years.

I'm glad Stephanie convinced you to write this. And I'm glad you're not backing down from these criminals. I hope these thieves have to pay the maximum penalty for their crimes! And I hope you get back ALL of your land!

Lisa- Wow, I just looked at the date of the last comment and then yours, it is a year later! Seems like just yesterday. I pray that we will get our land back and those criminals do go to jail, 3 of their accomplices live in New Jersey.
