As we all know the Cheese Steak was born in Philadelphia. Pats Steaks has been an icon in south Philadelphia since 1930. Pat and Harry Olivieri brothers from Abruzzi Italy invented the cheese steak. Located at 9th & Wharton and Passyunk Ave.in South Philadelphia. Right next to the famous Italian Market.

Last Tuesday I picked up my father and drove to Boothwyn PA. To pick up a solenoid for my truck. On the way back I missed a turn which kept me on 95 north heading into Philadelphia. I asked dad if he wanted to go to Pats Steaks for lunch. We arrive at Pats and stand in line. This Philadelphia Icon is open 24/7 The have a large instruction board to tell you how to order your steak sandwich. This is a big deal when ordering. They can serve 50 people in a matter of minutes. So you walk up to the window and ask for a Cheese wit. You will receive a cheese steak with cheez wiz and fried onions.

Back in the 80's my father, brothers and I built a 1928 Ford Model A pickup street rod. My father still talks about his pick up. From the frame to the finish coat of paint we did it all.I donated an Chevrolet 350 engine and transmission from my camaro. The truck was beautiful when finished, medium silver on the body and charcoal fenders and running boards. We rebuilt the engine, transmission, reworked the frame and installed a corvette differential. Many hours in the garage with dad.

While standing in line to order I look up on the wall. There are multiple pictures of celebrities who have stopped by to experience Pats Steaks. Right above the order window I see a picture of my father truck. In the mid 80's some friend had a local Horsham rock band called the Mechanix. They requested dads truck for a promo shoot. I drove the pick up to Dublin Pa to an old gas station. They did the photo shoot for the band using dads truck. I nudged dad and pointed to the picture of his truck. At first he was a little unsure it was his truck. Once the surprise was over he was like a kid in a candy store.

What a great day to share with my father.

Hi John,

I can smell them already. They have a great location next to the Italian Market. I like #3 "do all your borrowing in line". That's cute.

Have a great week and weekend.

Clint, they are comical with the sign. No 4 is my favorite. If you make a mistake go to the back of the line and start over !!

Make it a great day !!!

Thanks

And don't complain if you order the wrong thing.  They don't care :-)  Not going to get into the debate over the best Philly Cheesestake but Pat's is a classic just like your dad's car.

John, You almost opened the who makes the best can of worms debate.  We lived at the Shipyard in '86-88, so I've stood in that line and the one across the way more than once :)

Liz and Bill

That debate will continue forever. I gues the safe thing to say Pats is the creator of Phillys Steak sandwich. Yes there are many different places to go and everyone has their opinion. Always an interesting place to visit.
