Pete and RePete, Kate and DupliKate were mice

Pete, RePete and KateThis is for those who have another blog.  Do you repeat what you write on your other blog on your Active Rain blog?  Do you duplicate content from your other blog on your Active Rain blog?

Are you afraid of duplicate content on your blogs?

My other blog is a RealTown Blog called Columbus Best Blog.  It is not the best blog in Columbus (by a long shot) it is just about the best of Columbus Ohio....It is not all real estate, there is some duplication.... I don't think I have ever copied an entry from either, but I have done similiar entries with some of the same text.

I know as a "Newbie" on Active Rain I discussed duplicate content with Kristal Kraft and Maureen Francis.  As I recall Matt Heaton commented "Be not afraid...." well maybe that is not an exact quote... I must have heard that phrase somewhere though.

I read something this AM on Toby Boyce's Blog about duplicate content...actually Toby's entry is about dogs... but Toby mentions duplicate content on his other blog (written by his dog, Sadie) and Active Rain.

Researching what the ones who know (Matt Heaton, Mary McKnight, Bill French, Jim Cronin, Bill French, Joel B. ) have to say about duplicate content I found something very, very recent from my pal Bonnie Erickson about differentiating blogs.

Searching Active Rain Blogs for duplicate content you come up with blogs about plagarism and a bunch of other issues but there is some great advice on Active Rain from Bill French, Mary McKnight, Jim Cronin etc.  (the gurus?) and some of US about duplicate content.  Some of it conflicting.

Bill French in July

More Bill French in July  RSS is not duplication

August The Tomato  by this time I was an Active Rain member and I remember this....

Joel B. at the same point

September Roberta

I look at what others are doing on their blog, I really like the Jim Cronin approach, teasing readers to his other blog...  Mary McKnight seems to post what she has written on RSSPieces on Active Rain.

I look at what Maureen Francis, Jay Thompson, Teresa Boardman, Bonnie Erickson and a bunch of other bloggers are doing on their other blogs and if Google has smiled on them or penalized them....It is all about Google.

I think if I remember the story right, Pete, RePete, Kate and DupliKate were names my mom and her brother's gave to the mice at the lake cottage as kids.  I hate mice but the story and those names have always stuck with me.... I am afraid of mice... the lady on the chair in the cartoons where there is a mouse in the house?  That's me.

Maureen,

I don't recommend that people cross post between their outside blog and their AR blog.  RSS  Pieces runs some very complex code on our site that allows us to duplciate content without tripping filters.

Although in the future when people sign up for an RSS Pieces blog all posts can be tagged to cross post RSS excerpts to their AR blog, whcih should make the whole process easier.

Hope that helps

I thought that was probably the case Mary!!!!  You have a distinct advantage over US as well you should.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Maureen,

I had read in several places, don't know where at this point, that duplicating content was heavily frowned on....by whom, I don't know, but frowned on nonetheless.  Having said that, I have duplicated some of my posts from here onto my RealTown blog, but I've also taken some of the posts I've done here and reworded them a bit on the RT blog, too.  I find it, at times, a bit much to keep up 2 blogs.

Ann: There was a "WWBD" discussion (not the usual supspects involved though ) going on of why if Mary McKnight was doing it, we should not be doing it on our blogs.

Maureen I love the mice, Linda Davis is gonna love them!  And yes, I am afraid of too much of it. I do it but always feel like I am plagerizing myself. But it's hard to be original all the time plus sometimes I just want to make sure my email list on RT gets it. I will look at the links you have above, because one of the other things I mildly think about is will search engines think its the same thing and get confused and be mad at me.  Thanks for the links too.

Maureen,

So far, we’ve not double posted an entry—but we may, as we are not very concerned about Google-juice, and our other blog has been seriously neglected. Even retired folks can be too busy to blog as much as the working world might think.

I am not afraid of anything.  The rules change all the time.  I measure, monitor and test and do what owrks best for me.

By the way I have tried to send you emails several times and they bounce no matter which account I send them from.  You may be losing internet leads if this is happening to other people.

Teresa... I hope you are right.

I really DON't have the time to write a new or re-write what I have posted.

What is the WORST that can happen?

Carole:  I hate mice! I like the approach The Tomato Blog uses... use Active Rain to lure readers to your blog.  I thought at first that AR would not like that but that is more RT thinkings...

Teresa: Thanks about the email.  I added you, Bonnie and Leanne to my address book...that could help... funny it has taken me so long.... someday I will add Maureen F. That certainly doesn't help with internet leads though does it.  I find they use the contact me forms, sign ups on my websites rather than my email address... maybe for obvious reasons.

I am going to shift my Active Rain email back to another address /mailbox...it is overwhelming my business address....well that and my spam is way up.

Craig:  The worst that could happen... hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I duplicate on 3 blogs.  If the Google SWAT team shows up at my door, I'll slug it out with them.  I figure that I can handle 5-6 googlers in a street fight.

Maureen, I am editing any posts from my outside blog to better serve the needs of this community and to not be so self serving. My outside blog is specifically for our clients, so exact duplication sounds way to chest pounding. I think it's a simple thing to make constructive and effective edits to differentiate the two without having to start from scratch.

Brian Brady: A good book...I was referring to the line from the good book... it appears 122 times in the OT and a couple hundred in the NT according to Rabbi Marc Gellman! I can not find that many...but I say that's duplicate content. Joshua 1:9, Isiah 40:9, John 6:20.....That was the theme of his first sermon in St.Peter's square....JP2's not the Rabbi's.

For an eastern twist on the theme:
Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still.

I do have another blog:  www.brian-brady.com

It's basically dup blogs from here.  I am a guest author on www.nelalive.net

You're correct about the Good Book and the appearances of "Be Not Afraid".  That was the theme of his first sermon.  I saw him say it again in Philly in 1979; a powerful message for a 14 year old.

Did you know that there is a Papal Blog? Seriously.

Maureen- something tells me this is not your first blog.  Again, I can't think of you not having found a voice from the get-go.

A bit of early controversy reared its head in this entry.  A taste of things to come.

Duplication, repetition, plagiarism.

All there :)

Nope not my first post on AR.

August 2006 (23) the last link is my first post... this was months later.

Whether or not to repost still gets discussed.  I think we know more about how search engines treat it than we did in December 2006... I think I have reposted something but I can't remember what. I did it to test how it would show up in search engines.  The world did not come to an end but it is not something I do a lot of.  Although I will post about the same thing on all three blogs (my two blogs and ActiveRain.)   I do like the "link to " post.  I think it is a good idea. I am glad ActiveRain is cool with it.  I think a lot of the controversy is hoopla and double talk to sell a blogging platform...yet you can go to blogs on the platform and find some bloggers who do duplicate on AR or elsewhere.  Their blog, their choice.

This was not about plagiarism, but about copying your own blog. Plaigarism is wrong.
