Who are you when no one is looking?

By
Real Estate Agent with Austin Texas Homes

A professional counselor once told me that each of us have three persona's. The person we are, the person we think we are and the person we want others to see. It was an awakening moment for me to contemplate that thought. How could I bring those three together so that the person I was and the person I showed others were the same. The key, I think is to take an honest look at who I am when no one is looking at my life.

Once I know that person, and own my weaknesses and strengths, I am on fertile ground for personal change. The energies I would expend hiding the weaknesses of that person can now be completely devoted to improving, changing and opening to all that is best for my life.

As a Realtor, we encounter people on a daily basis. Just as we can read them and see through any facade so too can they read us. Building a trust relationship with our clients is crucial. The first steps toward a healthy trusting relationship is to be who you are when no one is looking.

I always carry the integrity flag.  However, when I leave town and go to my farm in Wisconsin, at least I don't need to maintain a 24/7 professionalism.  I get to let my hair down a bit.  For me...that's fun.  The integrity stays, but the goofiness starts!

Integrity. What a great concept.

I've been working with teens for 35 years, and one of the first principles I teach them for being happy, successful and fulfilled in life is "integrity" - Integrity comes from the word "Integer," which means one or "oneness." It is vital in life to figure out who you are, what your core beliefs are and how you will act, and then not let anything chip away at your integrity.

Great article to make us all stop and think about who we really are, Michelle (or Alan) ;)

Alan and/or Michelle - a great way to find out is how you play golf. Its a "gentleman's" game, only in the sense that one of its major qualities is personal integrity. Do you play by the rules, even when no one can see? Or do you sometimes use a "foot wedge" to improve your lie.

Integrity is a word too many people try to massage to fit the definition they need at the moment.

Nice reminder - looking in the mirror and liking and respecting the person you see is so very important. I also think we just keep evolving as we get older - adding even more substance and value to our family, friends and people we encounter...it's a never ending process.
