Recently, I was on a Panel of three blogging agents from various parts of the country. I'm in Austin TX, one agent was in Huntsville TX, and the other was in Surprise AZ. Most people would agree that Austin is a fairly large Metro area as it has about 1.5M people. Huntsville is a fairly small area in East Texas. Surprise AZ is mostly a retirement area of over 55+ communities. With that, these three areas are vastly different.
All three of us have very different blogging styles, yet our styles work for us in our particular markets.
I went and looked at some of my stats for my posts for the past few months. I found 42 posts that had huge and semi-huge click through views. What I found is that out of these 42 posts, 20 were "business" posts and 22 were "personal" posts. Business means it's about a community, a builder, a market report, or a story about one of my buyers or sellers. Something real estate related. Personal means it's about me, my family, activities around Austin we've done, and just about anything else not real estate related.
While on this panel, I was asked what I blog about and I said about 65% business and 35% personal. I got that number because at the height of my blogging, I was posting about 10 a week. 6-7 would be about business and 3-4 would be personal. I've kinda kept to that formula. Many people gasped when telling them how many buyers/sellers I've gotten because of the personal stuff.
For example, my second buyer in Austin was an agent from another state relocating to the area. She was watching my posts about looking for an area of town and my builder issues. The post that got her attention the most was about the Topsy Turvey upside down tomato plant. When I look back, it got 32 comments and 2356 click throughs. Wow! Lots of people online wondering if the Topsy Turvey Plant works!
I closed some buyers last year who were watching my posts for months before contacting me. They have a daughter about 6 months younger than my daughter, so they were getting ideas of places to take her and things we had done since they were new to the area. That resulted in a referral of the brother and a referral of another friend of theirs.
More of my Personal posts had more click throughs than my Business posts. Maybe I need to rethink my blog and post 65% personal and only 35% business?? Or maybe just follow the clicks as the results were about half and half?? It's interesting to look at things in this way. Back to one of the panelists, she lives in a mostly retirement area and all she does is blog about the communities and market reports. She doesn't post anything personal. Do you think she would have more results if she posted about personal stuff? Hard to tell because our markets are apples to oranges.
Does anyone else in a semi-large metro area like Austin blog only business with little personal stuff mixed in? If so, would you like to do an experiment for the next few months and see if posting personal stuff would increase your results? I'm very curious...
