I need to get a mailbox

A week after a closing  I was talking with the buyer who informed me that she needed to get a mailbox. You mean the Mailboxmailbox is not there? I just couldn't imagine the seller taking the mailbox.

How come the neighbor has two mailboxes? I then explained that one of the mailboxes is actually hers.

During the process of working with this home buyer I took the time to show her where things were in the community, including the Post Office, but, for some reason it just never registered that I needed to point out the mailbox. What I failed to keep in mind was that some of my buyers are coming from areas where the mail is delivered to a mailbox in an apartment building. In Dutchess County most of the mail is delivered to a free standing mailbox and for half of us who get the mail this way the mailbox is on the opposite side of the street. That was the case in this instance and that is why my buyer thought the neighbor had two mailboxes.

So why are the mailboxes on only one side of the street? The United States Postal Services regulations clearly state that mailboxes should be installed on the right side of the road. That is the direction in which the carrier is travelling and the intent behind the regulation was for safety reasons.

It sounds obvious - later. Most people wouldn't think of it being across the street.

Cute story.  Around here mailboxes are on both sides of the street at the end of each driveway.  I'm guessing that's a more rural area?

When I was doing the final walkthrough on my own home right before closing I realized there was a hole on the front yard. Yep, the sellers took their mailbox with them. It cost me $100 that day at Lowes to get a post and box and also get a handyman to install. The house was lucky to get me. It lookd a million times better since the previous cheap ass sellers moved out. I hope they are jealous every time they drive by.

I just had to research this for one of my clients.  I have to say I was not aware of these regulations and just sort of took thinkgs for granted.  This is new construction and the builder doen't supply the mail box.

We don't get mailboxes in Jackson. Mail within the town limits is not delivered to houses - you have to go to the post office to pick it up. Makes the post office quite the social center of town...hmmm, I feel a blog coming on!

Joan one of the things I like about real estate you are always learning and researching.

Yes most builders don't supply the mailbox.  Now you are informed for the next time.

Hi Jenn,

You're right about something that seems so obvious. Here at times it can be difficult to find the mailbox in a condo association, when they're in clusters. Times like that we need the owner's help.

Hi Jennifer, Leave it to the postal service to have ruling to put all the mail boxes on the right side of the street. In my area, only the older neighborhoods have mail boxes directly in front of their homes. All the newer homes and subdivisions have those community boxes, I call them, where there are about 50 in one location, and everyone has to drive there to pick up their mail. It easier for the mail carriers to only make one stop instead of 50 stops.

Jennifer:  Every area is different around here, and I have to admit I've forgotten to notify my buyers of where their mail box is also!

The terrors of moving from the city to the country. I'll bet it's a long way between street lights there too.

Jennifer, the last home I lived in had the mailbox across the street. And the road was rather busy. I remember going to the post office after a very hairy experience of getting my mail (which involved jumping over a fence to get out of the way of a speeding car). I walked in and demanded to see the postmaster. I lost my cool to say the least. Here was the gist of my conversation, "getting my mail should NOT be a near death experience". While the postmaster agreed, there was nothing that could be done about it short of me getting a post office box.

And yes, some people don't realize that is how we get our mail out here in the country!

yes, some of the streets I go on here, have them on the same side...drives me crazy.  It makes me very confused about the house I'm trying to find and I suppose less safe for emergency vehicles.

I figured that out for myself years ago when I saw post boxes on only one side of the road - but houses on both sides!

Jennifer - The mailboxes for our street are at the bottom of the hill as you turn on the street.  It's this ugly huge mail center with a bunch of PO boxes, like the ones you see at the post office.  It's quite ugly and institutional looking.
