Grab Your Paddle! Cincinnati Paddlefest June 23-25 2011

How'd you like to participate in one of the country's LARGEST canoe and kayak events? Get out on the Ohio River and head DOWNstream?

Be part of a floating armada of around 2000 canoe and kayak enthusiasts?

Well here's your chance! The 10th annual Paddlefest Weekend starts Thursday at Coney Island in New Richmond!

Thursday June 23rd at Coney Island: The Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (two sessions: 9:30-12:30 & 1:30-4:30). Outdoor water safety & environmental education programs. Towboat tour too! And actually, QUITE a bit more activities for the kids! FREE.

Friday June 24 at Coney Island: Ohio River Music & Outdoor Festival. 5-9:30 pm live music on the WNKU Band stage. Cardboard Boat Races 7-8 pm. Kayak clinics: noon- 7:30 pm. Outdoor Gear Market & Vendor Fair: 4-10 pm. And more, including a fishing tournament. Parking $3.00

Saturday June 25 at Coney Island: 8:15 to 9:15 a.m., paddlers in the water for 8.2 mile float trip. 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm, Gold Star Chili Finish Line Festival at Yeatman's Cove! Live music, refreshments and more! 8.2 mile float trip: Kids 4-14 $15, adults $30. Canoes still available to rent for $40, but kayaks are BRING YOUR OWN at this point!

2:45 pm last shuttle bus back to Coney Island.

Rosalie, We've kayaked a couple of times, once in Key West on vacation (VERY cool) and again on vacation at Atlantic Beach, NC. We were lucky enough to have the dolphins come around!

Donne, It DOES look like it might be a guitar! And we haven't been kayaking lately, but yes, I don't mind paddling :)

Tish, The guy in charge has done a phenomenal job of growing the event and providing a quality outing for everyone!

Barb, Easy to see why this would be so popular, both here and Grand Rapids.

Leah, I think it should be fun for those participating. An 8 mile trip downstream and then a party at the finish line? Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning/afternoon :)

Kay, The kayaks we've used have been stable, and the Ohio isn't a river prone to tipping folks. No rapids there :)

Gretchen, That's pretty hard core in Hawaii! This will be a nice gentle trip downstream. With the current I suppose you could skip dipping the paddle in the water and still float all the way to the end :)

John, Even a total novice could enjoy this one! What we learned this year is you can rent a kayak, but better book those MUCH earlier than the week of the event!

BLiz- my husband would have loved this if it were down here in FL. He has taken up kayaking and I think actually prefers that over the bass and larger fishing boats we used to have. Sounds like a fun weekend.

Kathy, We know we REALLY enjoyed it when on vacation in Key West. The clear waters, through some of the mangroves, picking up conch off the bottom, just a ton of fun!
