What's New in Kitchens?

By

Beautiful kitchens are very desirable. Your appliances are the focal point of your kitchen and it should accentuate your cabinets, counter tops, and floors. While traveling in Switzerland, I noticed that there was only one type of name brand kitchen appliance. Because I'm not sure, if I'm allowed to name the appliance, I'll give you a hint. All appliances began with the letter "E" and ended with the letter, "X".

Here are some of the newest kitchens being offered for sale. In the picture below, the island is round and it rotates. There was plenty of storage hidden below, all designed for efficient organization. Consumers have a choice of colors. Samples are on display behind the island. All smooth cook tops shined like glass or polished silver.

When designing a new kitchen, think about modern appliances that will still look fresh and new into the future. Traditionally, many Americans are attracted to products for sale - in Europe the mindset of the consumer is focused on innovation and quality.

Interestingly, I did not notice any granite counter tops. Counter tops had a sleek clean design.

Functionality, quality, efficiency - that's what I noticed.

Kitchen appliances were so shiny you could see reflections. For me, this was a fresh, contemporary look.

All Salesmen were professionally dressed. The majority of men wore long sleeve white shirts, black pants and tie or suits. Their focus was on the product; they did not trying to impress me. They let the product draw me in, to touch, explore and examine the product. Not once did any salesman ask me, "Do you want to buy it?" No one followed me around - they let me breathe and absorb the experience. It was as if, I was intoxicated.

I've lived through appliances that were white, almond, black, avocado, brown, harvest gold and stainless steel - but never have I seen anything that looked like any of these.

In the photo above, the consumer chooses their own cabinets, counter tops, colors, pull handles, etc. Everything is interchangeable.

Outside of the kitchen, here are some other interesting products that I thought you might enjoy.

Cat lovers, I know you love this one!!!

I hope you enjoyed this mini tour of what's new in innovation in kitchens and appliances. Perhaps they are already available to you now; if not, hopefully they'll be available to the American people soon. Quality products that lasts - that's all I want!

Patricia: I had almost fifty year old gold formica in my kitchen before I replaced it with granite. I know formica or something similar is coming back in style but, I'm glad I don't have to look at it anymore. We put that engineered wood floor down in the hall and kitchen and I love it. Tile in the office and utility room. Enough of that remodel, way too much work and expense.

Very interesting designs, Patricia...not quite exactly my style, but it's fun to see the design trends in kitchens, anyway. Thanks for sharing! :)

What interesting new ideas. I think I'm far too traditional and set in my ways to choose most of these. Fun to look at, though.

Personally I’m not wanting the washer and dryer to be in the kitchen.

A couple of months ago I was in a new home that had the dishwasher installed up at the countertop level by the sink. The explanation was that it was easier to fill and empty the dishwasher if you weren’t always bending over. I think they had a good point.

Patricia,

As a cook, I always head for the kitchen in every home I show or list. I like many of the newer man-made materials being used for counters but buyers seem to prefer granite!

WOW! What an exciting day and evening I had and I was happy to hear the news that my post got FEATURED.

Thanks to ALL who clicked SUGGEST - I am blessed to have you in the RAIN :)

Thanks to AR STAFF who found it to be a worthwhile feature - I am honored and humbled!

Thanks to ALL who took the time to comment and congratulate me on the FEATURE - I appreciate you too!

As a recap, this is what's new in Switzerland - kitchens for their future! All signs and language was in German; sorry I can't tell you what it costs or debate the issue of granite vs. non-granite. Buyers decide what they want based upon what's available and on the market. What I found to be very interesting is Quality that lasts is very important to the people in Switzerland. I did not find any products made in any countries outside of Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. Prices for everything was high but quality was higher than what I find shopping in America.

At my daughters house, her floors looked like the floors in the eleventh photo. Although I wasn't crazy about what it looks like, it sure FEELS good. Warm in the morning when you wake up; cool during the day. Yes! the floors are heated and temperature controlled. All of her blinds move from left to right, up or down, in or out and they deflect heat - plus they were very attractive. Inside her kitchen, I couldn't figure out how to use the electric stove, nor could I figure out how to open up the cabinets until my daughter and her husband showed me how to use their kitchen. Yes! I had to either figure out how to use the kitchen, or let them take care of my meals - I opted to let them take care of my meals - ha ha!

Everything in her house has a place for everthing. There is virtually no clutter at all. When I looked for the iron to press my clothes, my daughter handed me a steamer like you'd find at the dry cleaners. When I tried to help clean up the house, her vacuum cleaner (from Sweden) really sucks! Holy cow! It was very fast and efficient and there were more tools to choose from to reach any place in the house regardless of height or size.

Her kitchen was modern, but not as modern as the kitchens I photographed. I was also intrigued by the reflective finishes from the trade show and my immediate reaction was, there's going to be a lot of fingerprints. Well, I touched them, once, twice, repeatedly - they left no fingerprints! I'm sure if my hands were sticky with food, it would be a different story. But from the naked hand that was clean, if I was leaving fingerprints, it didn't show.

The walls in her house were also interesting. They were not made like American walls. You can not drive a nail into the walls but they do have a special way of hanging photographs without making holes. Another interesting thing is she had no bedroom closets. She had wardrobes and everything was organized. There was a place for everything!

Thanks for visiting my blog post. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Patricia:

Great photos and beautiful appliances.  I love the sleek look these appliances display.  What is going to replace granite.  I have been told that granite is on the way out, but I haven't been told what will replace it.  I have seen a number of homes with soapstone counter tops.  Nice material.

Patricia... great post and great photos.  BTW, most of those counters appear to be Caesar Stone - 97% natural quartz, with 3% polymers.  I'm going to reblog so others can learn about this amazing material.  it looks as beautiful as granite with less upkeep, plus, quartz is a sustainable product.  Caesar Stone is manufactured in Israel and distributed here in the US on both coasts (my son used to work for them).  It is an awesome product.  I've seen it used here in the Bay area in kitchens, bathrooms and an art studio!

Patricia- thank you for taking us on the tour.. it's so much fun to see what's out there.  And love your photos. I love how sleek everything looks.  I always think it's interesting how materials or trends come and go... I still like granite but I think there are definitely other materials out there.  I like that their design for these kitchens if functionality... at least we can pay for something that makes sense!  Congrats on the Feature.

All,

I am so thankful for the people in the RAIN and for the AR Staff who considered me Feature worthy.

I was happy to share these photos of what's new in Kitchens coming to you from Switzerland. Your comments and support means the world to me and I hope that for those of you who like to travel, you get to see and experience amazing discoveries, people, places and things of interest.

I'm always impressed with innovation that takes quality and functionality into consideration. Cost prohibited, many look for bargains; yet when you factor in the cost over time, quality beats the price all the time.

Here's to good sales, quality, and friendship!
