Every single day each of us uses energy. We all use water. We all create a certain amount of waste. There are many simple things that each and every one of us can do in order to cut down on the waste, use less energy, and have a smaller impact on the environment. Whether you live a conservative lifestyle or you tend to live without thinking much about your impact on the environment, you can cut down on your footprint.

Some of the steps toward a cleaner life are very easy. Using a thermostat that allows you to program the temperature setting for day time and night time helps to keep your energy use down. Heating and cooling temperatures don't need to be as prevalent at night. Turning the heat cooler at night and the air conditioning warmer at night helps to conserve a great deal of energy.

Make sure you have a well insulated home or apartment. This will help reduce energy use as well. If you haven't checked the insulation in the last six months you should go over it to make sure that it's intact. Replace any failing insulation early so that you don't lose your heating and cooling energy. Be sure to insulate your garage as well.

Changing the air filters that you have on the furnace and air conditioning units once every month will help the units function at a more economical rate. Dusty filters require the units to use more energy as they have to work harder to get the same result. Weather stripping, caulk, and window insulation will also help to improve the energy consumption of the household.

If you use batteries for items around the house such as flashlights or toys only use those that you can recharge. Battery waste is terrible for the environment even with specialized disposal rules. Avoid purchasing items that require batteries and limit the battery waste that comes from your home. Even when there are special rules for disposal many households do not follow these rules and simply throw used batteries in the garbage where the waste poisons the environment.

Make a point of buying your goods right from your own neighborhood. Everything from produce to household goods can usually be purchased from a local source. This helps the economical state of the town or city that you live in while it also helps reduce the number of goods traveling across the country or around the globe. You also get the extra health benefit of eating fresher produce that was grown by a farmer in your area.

There are all kinds of little things that we all can change in an effort to help increase the health of the environment. The more each one of us does the better the chances are that the ecological damage that has been done will heal.
