Okay, I have been wondering about this QR Code stuff that I've been reading about here on ActiveRain. I learned about "the idea" of the code. I just learned today that QR stands for Quick Response and it has been around since 1994. Wow its been around for a while and I haven't really seen it being used. That's not to say that it won't catch on, I just haven't noticed it being used in my field of work.

I've heard that the purpose is to allow someone to scan the Code with a "Smart Phone" and be given more information. And the ideas seem valid in certain situations. For the real estate agent, I can see how this can be useful.

  • The code on a For Sale sign can link to a video of the property, for example. The shopper can look at the property right there.
  • It can be added to business cards, flyers, and brochures easily. The reader can scan the code for additional information.
  • This code could be included in photos and video too. A little creativity may allow the agent to put the code in front of the viewer to get additional information.

I had some time to put together a short video using the QR Code. I will be using this video at Craigslist for fun and testing. I like to do some sort of testing, including here to get some feedback for the future. That way changes can be made and new ideas can evolve.

In this video, there is no apparent connection to me or Tromler Construction. Except for my brief photo toward the end and the QR Code itself. The link is to a blog at Wordpress that I use for local SEO.

Well, I just learned something new once again on AR.

I just assumed QR codes were really new. Been around since 1994? Not so new after all. Of that means the boat REALLY left without me!

tromler qr codeTom - creativity is what makes a QR experience turn from bad to fantastic - unfortunately people just make codes for the non-mobile optimized websites as landing pages (wrong!) - need to scan a code and look at the appearance on your phone - if you have to zoom-zoom-zoom just to read the text then it is time to rethink the landing page. I love the topic - I just included it as a major part of the webinar I hosted this past week (fun and funky video by the way of yours) - did you know that QR codes and URL shorteners go hand in hand? they create smaller less intense codes like this one for your site!

What a difference! I had no idea Craig.

I did scan my landing page but didn't know about a mobile freindly option. Didn't realize that the code intensity was determined by the URL.

Thanks for the advice, love it when you stop in!

The QR code was first used to track vehicle parts in the manufacturing process in Japan.  The QR code eventually expanded into the packaging industry.  I think the advancement of the SmartPhone helped bring the QR code to our attention.  Here is a great website on the QR Code.

With QR codes on For Sale signs, size matters, too.  Depending on several things, how clear the image is, shade, or wrinkles on the paper, scratches on the sign etc., - a 4" high QR code should be able to be scanned from about 4 FEET away - again, depending on how good the cell phone camera is.  I enlarged one to about 7 X 10 and printed it to use on the front of a flyer box - I wanted someone to be able to scan it from their car, I tried it and got a good read from about 10 feet away - I have a one year old Droid with a 3.2 megapixel camera.

7x10 is pretty big, but I like the idea of doing it from the car. 10 feet away is impressive!

Thanks Virginia

Tom - There are a lot of AR blogs on QR codes. I keep saying I was going to put on my listings but haven't. I can get it from Reabird.com, which I subscribe, but I just have not done it. My feel is the QR codes eliminates the opportunity on a sign call. But it is the way of the future. All those smartphones out there.

I think of it as one more opportunity to reach the target market.

I've seen the talking homes, you call or tune your radio to listen about the home. I may not call about that home but welling to listen first. That may lead to a future call. Same with QR Codes.

Thanks Ken.
