How is your Instant Recall Memory?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

You have to admit you must have experienced a time you were out to dinner and a couple you worked with several years ago walks up to your table and says "Hi, we love our house...in another couple of years we are going to be calling you to help us move again..how are you?...blodee blodee blodee!  And, wouldn't you know it you have forgotten their name!! Ekk....what do you do? What do you say??

Believe it or not memory is a skill...the ability to retrieve from our memory bank is learned. Getting older is not an excuse.  We all say how forgetful we are getting and it isn't age.  We are not concentrating on organizing that filing system in our brain!!

Jana OwenTuesday's office sales meeting had an intriguing speaker, Jana Owen, and she spoke on "Discovering Your Memory Power and Start Reading Smart". Learn more about her and her company on www.deliverfreedom.com/freedom_team.html.

She was amazing and played a memory game which did leave us speechless!  In our profession remembering names is crucial to making our clients feel special and establishing them as clients for life.

Remember according to Dale Carnegie's book "How To Win Friends and Influence People" two tips ring loud and clear:

1. What is everyone's favorite topic?  Me!!
2. What is the sweetest sound?   Our name!

Dorie- our WCR had a similar guest speaker and I was blown away at what they remembered.  I'll forget names but remember everything else about a person.  But Dale C was right... we love to hear our name and discuss ourselves.

My biggest weakness!  I find myself struggling for a name of a client I haven't seen face to face in years and wish I had taken more time to learn the techniques of memorization.  You are right, this is important part of our business and means a lot to the clients.  Now ask me about the home and I can recall details, that is unfortunate that the name escapes.  All the best for a great weekend!

I'm very good at remembering a face but not as good at remembering the name.  You're right Dorie, it is a skill.

Dorie ~  I have a close friend who is very fond of proclaiming her frustration over the mispronunciation or spelling of a person's name.  As she is quick to point out:  Your name is the ONE thing in this world no one else can take away from you; therefore, it should be honored and used properly at all times!!!

Of course, I've heard this many, many times -- with a name like "Latisha" a/k/a "Tish", most people think I've managed to misspell my own name, as it must be "Patricia" and/or "Trish".

I could really use a course in memorization.  Hope you have a great weekend.

Memory is definitely a skill and one that I soooo need to work on! I remember faces perfectly, but names sometimes have me scratching my head.

Dorie --- THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME!    Sure sign of getting older!    I was buying a speciality wine for a couple that had just closed, and the clerk could not help with an Argentian wine, so she sent the manager over!    She called me by name, scared me.... and reminded me I sold her and her husband a house MANY years ago.    WOW, I am so not keeping up with my database.   The hazards of it growing to almost 500!

What is it with all of us that remember faces but not names?  I also often remember the circumstances of the meeting so that often makes up for not remembering the names.  The point is they want to know that they were remembered and at least if you have in some way!

Hi Barbara,

Sounds like you are keeping up with the houses! I tend to remember the houses as I've listed and sold some of the same ones several times!

Studies show that our memory is like a muscle.  The more we use it the stronger it gets, even into old age,  I have on word for that Ha!  Maybe I need a mnemonic device.

Dorie...I have to really concentrate on someones name, relate it to something else that will stick in my mind and it does work...for a little while. There are many times that I run into past clients and have such a hard time recalling their name. This is something that I need to commit to work on.

I hate it when you recognize the face but can't put a name to it.
