Yes, I AM a computer geek. I love computers, I love technology - I live, breathe, sleep and sometimes eat computers for breakfast (toasted with butter and jam? YUMMMM).
So - some new computer geek news for those who are interested!
This Monday, ICANN (The International Committee for Assigned Network Names) approved the release of custom global top-level domain names.
What does that mean? You can now apply for customized domains. for example - .ActiveRain or .EmilyRead or .ComputerGeek
How cool is that?
Kinda cool - but not as cool as I thought when I first read it.
First off, it's not an easy process...
Approval for a customized domain name will take anywhere from 9 to 20 months.
Second point
It isn't cheap. With an application fee of $185,000 plus another $25,000 annually - woah mama!!
This sounds like the big wig corporations will be the ones to be utilizing this feature... it's not exactly a cost effective venture.
Is this merely a money grab? I think after a few years, the costs may go down - but who knows! It will be interesting to see where this goes (applications will start in 2012)...
In the meantime, I think I'll stick with my .com site... how about you?
