Computer Geek News - Domain Names

By
Real Estate Agent

Yes, I AM a computer geek. I love computers, I love technology - I live, breathe, sleep and sometimes eat computers for breakfast (toasted with butter and jam? YUMMMM).

So - some new computer geek news for those who are interested!

This Monday, ICANN (The International Committee for Assigned Network Names) approved the release of custom global top-level domain names.

What does that mean? You can now apply for customized domains. for example - .ActiveRain or .EmilyRead or .ComputerGeek

How cool is that?

Kinda cool - but not as cool as I thought when I first read it.

First off, it's not an easy process...

Approval for a customized domain name will take anywhere from 9 to 20 months.

Second point

It isn't cheap. With an application fee of $185,000 plus another $25,000 annually - woah mama!!

This sounds like the big wig corporations will be the ones to be utilizing this feature... it's not exactly a cost effective venture.

Is this merely a money grab? I think after a few years, the costs may go down - but who knows! It will be interesting to see where this goes (applications will start in 2012)...

To read the full article on Mashable (one of my very favorite computer geek sites to visit) click here.

In the meantime, I think I'll stick with my .com site... how about you?

@Bill - yes - definitely the world needs more geeks!

@Mike - ahhhhh yes, the .co - I had a hunch that these would never take off - too confusing. Did you know that the .co doesn't stand for company? It stands for District of Columbia *computer geek trivia* :)

Seriously, Emily, $205,000!  If I had that kind of money from RE I wouldn't NEED that site, it would be purely a glamour site....
