It's Ninety Degrees ...But There Are Snowballs in Baltimore.

It's ninety degrees...but there are snowballs in Baltimore..not this kind of snowball from last winter.

These snowballs grow on trees and bushes and produce some beautiful flowers with  colors ranging from white, to pink, to blue, to purple.  I have heard of red but have not seen them. These bluish, purple or pink flowers add a color you don't normally see in the flower garden.

Another name for hydrangeas are snowballs, and we have some beauties in the Baltimore area. I snapped these photos at my Gardenview property   that is now under contract.

Those are stunning. I always enjoyed having hudrangeas in our yard in New England, but they are tough to grow here because of our weather. Thanks for the garden stroll back in time.

Margaret I too love hydrangeas. If you add just a little copper sulfate to the soil your blue hydrangeas will be a shade bluer.

I love hydrangeas, especially the way they bloom. I would love to find a nice plant where I could go by every day at the same time and take a picture of a snowball that was blooming in order to create a time-lapse sequence. It would be neat.

Here's a dark pink one just for you:

Red hydrangea

It's the closest I've ever seen to red and is in my “Eric can you do something with this” file. Red flowers are just so difficult to take pictures of. It’s one of those things that I’m working on to try to find out how to do it, and when I do, the secret will be blog material.

Have a nice day

Debbie, Hope you find a way to stay cool.

Thanks Chris.

Jeff, You are welcome. Thanks for your email last night.

Praful, I would love some 60 degree weather.

Cindy, Hope you will share some photos with us.

Maya, Isn't that amazing how we can change the colors.

Karen, There is one more kind of snowball, pretty native to Baltimore, that I need to write about. They are cold and sweet and a delicious summer treat.

Russel, Thanks for the red snowball. Thanks for the heads up on photographing red flowers. My red roses in my last post were not that sharp. Look forward to your finding the secret.

Roger, They are lovely flowers with beautiful colors.

Wow, look at those hydrangia's above! What an awesome sight!  I have both hydrangia's and a snowball bush in my yard.  Snowball's are much smaller but just as beautiful.  Great photos Margaret!
