Friday's Photos ~ Rediscovering My Community...
I am often guilty of driving through communities in my area and not even giving anything a second glance. Why? If I have seen something once, I have seen it a hundred times. I find it ironic how one turns a blind eye towards one's own community yet when I go somewhere, out comes the camera and before I realize it, I have filled the card with photos.

As a professional in the real estate field, my business depends upon clients who are purchasing or selling property. People buy on emotion, yet I often feel nonchalant when it comes to my own stomping grounds. It is difficult to walk through my own back yard and see things as if this was the first time, but I am challenging myself; if I could, what would I see, shoot and write about?

ActiveRain has been great about periodically featuring posts on local happenings. Maybe sometime in the not so distant future, the gods may offer a challenge to all of us to rediscover our own communities. In the interim, I challenge you to do the same...

Michael- I already like Franklin just from that one picture you took.  When my husband and I have been driving through our area... we will often come across an abandoned building or a house that has been torn down.... ones we've driven by for years.  We look at each other and ask "What was there.. do you remember?" We should all try to open our eyes to what's around us.

Mike,

I think we're all a bit guilty of ignoring those people and places that are too familiar. The expectation being...they'll always be there when we're ready again.

Michael - What a lovely community, and a great shot you got.  I love my area, and since joining AR, have become so much more aware of the things around me... but I know I could do better!  I think I'll go on an adventure in my own little neighborhood today with Tanner and my 2 nephews.  Things always seem more exciting through the eyes of a child :0)

There is a wealth of information  and history in each of our communities if we would just open our eyes. One would never want for something to blog about.

Michael, I caught myself doing this last week. I know I didn't see many things that were right in front of me. All in the way you look at it. Great post and photo.

Michael - The Franklin community would like to think that the square hasn't changed in many years, but I know that it has. The statue of the soldier still had a chip missing on it's hat from where it was dropped in 1899. The statue was erected by the daughters of the confederacy in honor of the local soldiers who died in the Civil War.

I lived in NYC for the better part of my life, but it wasn't until some visiting friends pointed out a building with the most beautiful architecture that I ever noticed it. I hear you loud and clear about the non-chalant way we go through our own surroundings at times.

Hi Michael~ I feel a big part of our job in creating posts is to represent our communities. Thank you for the reminder to Flaunt what we've got in our localisms!

Have a great weekend...

All of us should be doing localisms that highlight the quality of life in our communities.

I do a pretty good job showing the blooming flowers but I guess I should be photograph more community features and businesses.

Blooming for you!

That is a worthy challenge. I love to read what's going on in all the communities across ActiveRain however I find it difficult to find the same enthusiasm when I look locally.

That is why when working with buyers and we get down to the last number of homes .. that I ask them to walk the neighborhood between the houses (if within reasonable distance and easy to do in Chicago) and take in the community/neighbors.

Michael, a good friend of mine, Malcolm Johnston, did a series on local place in Trenton in May, just like you are suggesting... I told him that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and to expect me to copy him with a series promoting local places...
