Do you work from home? Does it involve a Computer?
It doesn't even have to be full time. Any amount of work that you do at home involving a computer puts you at risk of a catastrophe if your hardware or software fails.
You should have a contingency plan in place to face the ultimate probability that at some point in time you're going to need a rescue.
First and foremost... back up... back up... backup.... And keep those back ups of your work safely secured elsewhere. For instance... God forbid you had a fire and it destroyed your computer. If your back ups were located in the bottom drawer of your desk... say bye bye.
•2. Have all the information on your computer readily available in "hard copy" form. Such as;
Make and model... serial number, operating system and version. Amount of memory and hard disk space. Software name and version
•3. Talk to friends and associates. Ask about problems they have encountered with their computers and
what they did to have the problem corrected. Ask them for names of the professionals that helped them
overcome the problems, and keep a list of at least three companies that have provided your friends and
associates timely professional services. Murphy 's Law states that when your computer goes down,
your first contact won't be able to fit you in for at lest a week.
•4. Did I mention Back up?
•5. If you are running Windows XP, there's a nifty little program that helps you travel back in time to a place where everything was running just right and the computer Gods were acting in harmony. It is called System restore.
By clicking on; start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore
You have a choice of
a. Going back in time to when your computer was "working right" or.....
b. Creating a "restore point" if you know that your PC is working right and plan for a future where
you may have to come back to this point if your computer messes up.
Before you download or install any new hardware or software, create a "restore point" that you can go
back to .... Just in case....
6 Did I mention BACK UP?
Happy computing.
