What happens when points are ill gotten

by Michael Mapes

We all know by now how to achieve points on AR.  Active Rain is a point based blogging system and if the most part it works.  You write bolgs for consumers to read and you score 200 points, more if people actually like what you wrote.  You also score points for making comments to other blogs, Invite other to join Active Rain and you can build yourself residual points.  The point system is alive an well on Active Rain.

Other Points

Until friday I did not know that you can post photos to Localism and score points.  In fact post two photos and you can score 150 points and then 25 points for each additional photo.  Here in lies a potential problem.  When you have reached your 10 blog max and you have exhausted you comment limit for the day, what is a person to do to maintain ranking and point advantage.  Answer post photos that may or may not be ones you have taken of you area.

Many members of Active Rain and I suspect that number is in the high 90% range post blogs and comments that they feel are of value to not only the author but also to the general public.  But the other percentage of people have nothing of value to say or go through the motions in order to gain points.

Posting photos on localism is a great way for consumers to gain some valuable information about your area.  Posting photos from other websites that are not of your own creation is FRAUD and prohibits free and open competition.  If you have nothing of value to say, for petes sake do not blog just to add points.  Sharpen you skills and open your mind and learn what the public wants.  If you find your self behind in the points do not commit fraud by posting photos that do not belong to you.  I know of one person who has posted over 40 photos to localism and judging by the quality of the photo this person ought to be a professional photographer and not in the Real Estate Business.  Accumulating over 3,000 points in the process.

Cheating hurts everyone

Once I learned of this point accumulation I almost through in the towel and quit AR.  I blog to provide information for people.  Help them avoid the pitfalls in Mortgage financing and expose predatory lenders.  I have over 111 posts and over 150 comments to other blogs.  I believe I am playing with in the rules.  This persons actions has caused me to rethink the work I am doing here and possible look for another way to add value to people.

Blog to help people and not for the points.  If you are simply in this for the points then you are in it for the wrong reasons.

I don't think it is a reason to quit.  I have over 200 photos posted on Localism and I don't spend the time doing this for the points.  I have CLOSED business because of localism.  Other's can write copy and pasted articles about an area or spew out little factoids BUT when a consumer goes into a community and sees pictures, a picture says a thousand words.  A picture says an agent "has been there" and "knows" the area.

I do it because it is a search engine rich tool and for prospecting reasons.  I don't think everyone does it from a point standpoint.  Also, we no longer get points for adding communities, like we used to.  I am still adding communities every week, I don't get points for it.  Why would I do that?  People like to see their communities in lights.

It's psychological prospecting.

Michael,  I haven't seen the photos you refer to but speculating about fraud simply because the photos are high quality seems misleading.  As far as I know ActiveRain does police the system and will delete photos that are not legitimate or inappropriate.

I understand Renee but this person would add photos right after I would pass them in the points.  I agree with every word you said and I beleive you you are a very active member.  The postings I am referring to have no value at all.  Like pictures of a baskin Robings ice cream store, or a picture of a parking lot or a picture of clouds?  and they seem to appear within minutes of me passing this person in the points.  So I beleive that this person is posting illegitimate photos

Michael, those types of photos are not allowed on Localism and as Dan said, they are policing the site.  When we first started off able to post, I was posting some of the same types of photos and then they would :poof: and then we got an explanation.  We lost the points too.  It will catch up to them and the points will be deducted.

Michael:  Don't watch.  It's frustrating the heck out of you and certainly not worth the stress.  Keep doing what you do:  Write informative posts and participate in the community.  As you stated - it's not about the "points".

It is obvious you are blogging for the consumer in mind.  Just keep that up and let the other stuff roll right off your back.

Cheating creates little success. When you do it right, people recognize it, read it and respond to it. The cheaters won't last long on the site - so I wouldn't worry about it.

There are many unethical people in the world today but you cannot quit because of bad apples.  That would be the same thing as; moving out of the country because our government did something wrong.

People cheat everywhere and more when they thinks its cool.  AR seems to be doing a good job in keeping BS out of the areas but personally, I do NOT think it is their job to police everything.  If there are nude photos or something that should not be of public view then fine, it should be deleted and the creator should be warned 1st time and banned the second.

As to fraud, having copyrights in place only keeps the honest people out.  They are like door locks on your home.  You can't keep out the professionals thieves.  AR should not be the police in this area.  However, if there is fraud and someone tells them about it, I'm sure they will do something about it.

Many of us are not in it for the points....And you can always tell the members who blog for points....I usually don't comment on their posts and I stop reading them...they don't impress me...I read more than I comment, comment more than I write, but that is just me.(Go ahead, check out my points) I have posted many, many photos in my community and have received lots of points for it, but that is not why I did it. I take pride in my photos. I spend hours on them. I carry my camera with me everywhere. I have thousand of photos and a small sample is posted on a/r.

My advice to you would be to stop chasing the point god.....you can't buy anything with them.....there  not like frequent flier miles....can't get free gas with them....Relax...concentrated on good content that is what the consumer will be looking for...and SEO and google juice...not stupid points...wake up.

Michael,

I'm not sure what you mean. I posted to localism and have 11 photos in my post - I only got 200 points. Why do you think that there are 25 points given for each photo. This is not true in the case of my localism posts.

Michael,

If thats the case I would have more than 200 points would'nt you say. My 11 photos would be 375 points but I only have 200 points. How does that work? It doesn't add up.

What I find really annoying is when people feel they must make a comment on every comment on their blog.. even just to say "thank you".  When I used to get email when comments were added, it was SO annoying to get dozens and dozens and dozens of emails every day, most of which were the blog poster "thanking" someone for their comment, thus increasing their points!  Some of these posts have 20 comments and 20 'thank you's'... all which is done JUST for points!  It's ridiculous, and I left AR.

The funny part is all these realtors are blogging TO EACH OTHER!  Why???????  That's not going to get you BUSINESS!  A VERY small percentage have their blog which pertains to CUSTOMERS.

I firmly believe the only reason AR is as busy and successful as it is... is because most realtors have nothing to do but blog.  They are writing no business. They have no customers.  Successful realtors don't sit on Active Rain and blog to other realtors and make gazillions of comments on other realtors' blogs that are all about real estate and the industry!  Think about it....!

Successful realtors are out there selling houses.  They don't have time for this silliness and chasing points on Active Rain!

Well I am sorry that you feel that way, but you are entitled.  also you do not get points for commenting on your own blog.

Anyway hope you are selling homes

Michael : )

Thanks for taking my comment in the spirit in which it was given....So many members get hung up on the point system to the point of obsession. Continue to write wonderful content and the consumers will come. Read and comment on other members blogs and they will come and read yours and if you have anything interesting to say they will comment on yours. This is how you develop a following and establish friendships.

Anyone can dump junk posts and run up their points....members and consumer know who they are and avoid them and soon enough these gamers lose intesest and fade away.

Best of Luck to you Michael.

Michael, I know this is frustrating, I was on AR last summer when a lot of silly comments were being posted to 'outpoint' someone else in the office. People that game the system and AR was a novelty to some - I'm sure most of those people are gone. There are people that steal others ideas and photo's. If you cheat in one area of your life, you'll cheat in others.

I'm here primarily for the info people willingly post that helps me in my business, to learn, to connect with others. I love localism, post my little blogs and don't worry about the points. In my whole city, 13 people are AR members, that's a shame. They don't know what they're missing.

I'm excited that the blog I posted about my favorite pizza place is showing up first and second on google. That means more to me than points because I know someone in my town will be looking for pizza, they'll find my blog and it will help my friend's business. I like Sandra's comment about SEO and google juice.....I'm ready for a drink!

Michael - Just focus on what you're doing and be in integrity. The rest will take care of itself. Mary - I respond to every single comment on my blog. It's called reciprocating and it has nothing to do with points. It's common courtesy. Check out this post by TLW Have You Considered Reciprocating Your Comments? Hmmm? ROAR

Michael:  You know I'm pretty new to AR, and I don't really even know how everything works yet. I want to just tell you that you write some of the best material...stuff that matters. Keep your focus...people will recognize the value of what you are doing. In business, I've always just focused on what I wanted to accomplish. I don't ever worry about what my competition is doing. My goal is to set the bar so high that they are just running to catch up. Blessings!

Michael, check out Sarah Coopers blog, http://activerain.com/blogsview/237173/Hello-Gamers

she included a link to Laurie Manny's as well....at least AR is aware of the problem.

I totally agree with you!  However, I have also placed quite a few photos here on AR of which I believe are of value to the communities in which I work and I took them myself!
