The Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester PA

The Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester PA is an amazing place.

While the thought of hospice is not necessarily a pleasant one, knowing there is a place where a loved one can go to be as comfortable as possible in their final days is tremendously reassuring. And I know from recent personal experience that the Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester is a wonderful place for someone who is dying, and for family members.

I cannot imagine doing the kind of work that the Neighborhood Hospice staff does 24 hours a day, but I can tell you it was a wonderful experience for my Mom, me, and I believe for my sister who passed away just a few days ago.

I did not meet all the staff, although I spent many hours there with my Mom over the 2 ½ weeks my sister was there, but several - Sue, Margaret, and their social worker, Pat - stood out in my mind. They are something very special!!

A field of Sunflowers in Memory

The Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester has several program options, depending on need. While I can only comment on the Inpatient Hospice Program, I have no doubt their Palliative Care Program and their Certified Hospice Program are equally wonderful.

The rooms are large with art work and furniture, flat screen TVs and CD players, and equipped with fold-out beds in case a family member wishes to stay over. There is a kitchen, a large dining area, and a meditation room, with a social worker and chaplain on staff as well as on-call doctors in addition to the 24-hour nursing and nurse's aid staff.

The Neighborhood Hospice Inpatient Unit is located at

440 E. Marshall in West Chester.

They can be reached at 484-887-7700.

Going through such a difficult time, it is good to know there are still facilities that truly care about the people they are assisting.  I am so sorry for your loss Jeff, but glad to hear you were in a place of comfort & help though the experience. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  Excellent post of thanks.

I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

Those that deal with cancer patients are very special.  I spent today in Temple University Hospitals Cancer Center while Mom had treatment. Every person in that department are heros to me!!

Hi Jeff, A really wonderful way to say Thank you to those fine people that made life to the end for your sister a comfort both for her and you and the family. These difficult experiences we have in our lives are for a purpose, though we mostly never really understand. But having faith gets us through.

Thanks, Laura. I really felt compelled to write this becuase the people who helped us through the final 2+ weeks were so special.

Gay - I think I will. I stopped in to see them several days after my sister passed just to thank them for all that they did for us.

Jeff -- What a lovely tribute to those who helped your sister and your family. That time is so hard on all involved and I can tell you from experience you will never forget those who did help and ease the pain of your loved one.  It takes very special people to put suffering at ease and not only help the person afflicted but also help the family.  My condolences to you and your family.

Samuel - that is exactly how I felt, too. And now we are entering yet another phase of a similar situation with another close relative. The shock of the first has not yet passed! :(

Tom - it really was a wonderful experience, even from a distance and during the 10 days or so I spent there over 2+ weeks. It is all about quality of life!

William - that is so true. It has been an unforgettable experience, in many ways.

Jeff, hospice workers are indeed very special people.  My mother died yesterday at home.  It was made possible by some wonderful home hospice care workers, and my youngest sister.  It's so much better than going hooked up to machines in a hospital.
