The New York State Senate passed the marriage equality bill on Friday June 24, 2011.
The 33-29 vote in favor of the bill included four Republicans and is the first time a state Senate with a Republican majority has approved such a bill.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law late Friday night just before midnight.
"This vote today will send a message across the country. This is the way to go, the time to do it is now, and it is achievable; it's no longer a dream or an aspiration. I think you're going to see a rapid evolution," said Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Legal experts say this will now transform the national debate over the issue: "With a population over 19 million -- more than the combined population of the five states that currently allow gay marriage, plus the District of Columbia, where it is also legal -- New York is poised to provide the most complete picture yet of the legal, social and economic consequences of gay marriage" (Reuters).
I believe this exciting news will serve as a significant example for the rest of the country.
