The intent of the government survey system(GSS) (also known s the U.S. System of Rectangular Surveys, and the Public Domain Survey) was to create a large grid with every square of the grid uniquely identified.
The GSS is based on north & south / east & west intersecting lines, and is especially
adapted to describing land in concise symbols and words.
