My Favorite Maine Wildflower, Well, Put Me Down For Lupine.

The wild Maine lupines are all working together to catch the side of your eye driving around Northern Maine this weekend.

maine lupine new sweden aroostook county The Maine lupine wildflower gets my pick as some kind of beautiful. Drop dead gorgeous and no two patches, roadside stretches the same. Many are muted, bleached and plain purple but once in a while you hit a large patch of more colors. White, brilliant pinks, deeper blues, reds. What is your favorite of lupines and do you have them growing wild or in your flower garden where you live now?

Lupine you would think could transplant easily. Not my experience and starting from Lupine seed works best for some reason. And I have a green thumb, grew up on a Maine farm growing everything from potatoes to strawberries and plenty of varieties of corn, other veggies. These lupines behind the post office in New Sweden Maine, Aroostook County.

Andrew - I *LOVE* lupines!  I have tried to grow them both from bare root and seed, and have not had success - in Ohio, Tennessee, and now, AZ.....I guess they don't care for me!

Lupines are lovely and especially so when you see them in the wild.   Of course for me the favorite color is the purple.

Sharon ... Glad to know I am not alone.

Cindy ... Deep purple not washed out ones are pretty neat. Blood red is rare but special too! Will see if Active Rain FTD Roy can send you ladies a bunch.

Andy, We fell in love with the lupines when we visited Maine a couple of years ago.  We now have them growing in the front and back yard, and have plants for more to follow.  This was our first year with blooms, it was a long two year wait to wait for them to mature, but well worth it!

They are so gorgeous!  Probably would not do well in Texas heat. :(

Know a friend who planted some lupine and they are the deepest red I have ever seen. It must be genetically enhanced and they don't look real but maybe it is the country setting where they grow on their own that adds to the sizzle, eye candy too.
