A Very Flawed Argument
Hi, Steve: Priveleged to re-blog this post. The old plumber's analogy comes to mind. If you're away for a while and open your front door to find 3 feet of water and a gushing noise. What do you do first- shut off the water main or start mopping?
The choice is both clear and simple, and everyone would agree that both things have to be done- it just comes down to effective prioritization. Washington-wise, we need to do the right thing (though admittedly difficult at times) and shut down some valves- we'll all drown if we don't.
Rep. Jim Clyburn, second to Nancy Pelosi in the Democratic House leadership, says that we all agree that the country must raise more revenue. That simply is not true. We don't all agree with that.
Even if we did, there are two ways to do it. The right way by lowering taxes and generating significantly more tax revenues as has been demonstrated everytime it has been done - and the wrong way by increasing taxes.
Vice President Biden's ad hoc committee on reducing spending broke up because he insists on tax increases as part of the formula. The Republicans wisely and properly walked away from the table.
Raising revenue does not include more borrowing either. The debt limit is fine where it is.
The answer is to cut spending - not so more increases can be agreed to - but as an intentional, offensive move to reduce the federal debt.
