Paying It Forward - An Accident that could have been worse

Last Thursday I was traveling to Peterstown, WV to help my friend with her computer.  About a one hour drive from my home.  It started to rain so I slowed my speed as Route 219 is a very curvy road.   At one point I was going into a curve (my speed was 25mph) and my car started to slide. I went to the left, the right and almost into the hillside. I got the car straight and thank goodness there wasn't a car coming in the opposite direction.  That's when I noticed oil on the road and with the rain, the road condition was VERY slippery.

So, I continued going slow and was about two cars behind a black Honda SUV.  When all of a sudden the Honda starting sliding ..... like I did earlier.  It was so sudden, I almost got hit, and moved over to the shoulder of the road. The Honda went over to the left, back to the right (where I almost got hit), back to the left and went up a bank and got stuck in a ditch.

I stopped and jumped out of my car and went over to check the passengers, a mother and daughter.  They were both okay, but could not get the doors open and were afraid to move thinking the car would flip over on its side.  I tried to get cell service but to no avail. Just then a woman in a truck stopped and I asked if she had cell service. She didn't, but drove back about a 1/4 of a mile where she could get service and called the police.

Other cars stopped and I informed everyone about the oil slick on the road.  A motorcyclist said he almost wrecked about a 1/2 mile down the road.  The police arrived within 15 minutes later, and I informed him what happened and about the oil on the road.  He said he would have that taken care of.  He talked to the mother and daughter in the Honda, after finding out that they were not hurt and the doors would not open.  He asked if they wanted to climb out the windows since the Honda's right wheels were stuck pretty tight in the ditch and that the car probably wasn't going to move.  Just then the fire trucks and ambulance arrived.

I informed the women in the Honda that I was leaving since help was here.  They thanked me for waiting with them and getting help. Needless to say I was really shaken up as much as they were and kept praying that the car would not flip on its side.

If anything like this happens to me, I hope someone will stay with me until help arrives.  It felt good to hear them thanking me, and I was so glad NO ONE got hurt.  This accident could have been worse.  I thank God for being with all of us that morning.

Dearest Rebecca -
SOOOOOOOOOO glad you are OK!!!
I have always told my children that the oil slick is a big danger after the rain.
Oil on the road is an ambush of sorts!
Have a happy (and safe) day -
Lynn

PS  Although I am certain you won't have any need for it, lots of folks would stop and be grateful for the opportunity to be at your side if you needed them.  L.

My gosh, Rebecca, so lucky that all were OK and that you stopped to help.  You hear so many stories of folks just continuing to drive by (either because they think someone already has stopped to help, or they don't want to get involved). Thank you for sharing this!

Helping others is the correct thing to do. I notice far fewer do today than in years past. Remember to only stop if it is safe to do so. In some areas you could become the next and worst accident.

WOW you really did your part and helped out. I'm glad no one was hurt and you were able to find a police officer to help get the situation taken care of.

I'm glad you were cautiously driving, and had a sense to slow down.  You knew what might happen . . . and it certainly did.  GLAD you were there and okay to provide help.

WOW that sounds really scary! You're so lucky you were able to avoid getting into an accident with them, and they were lucky they didn't over correct and go flying off the road further than the ditch.  Thank goodness good people still stop to help.

Rebecca, that sounded like a pretty scary moment for all of you when that accident happened...I'm so glad you were there to check on the mother and daughter and had that woman in the truck call for help. :)

Lynn, my friend you are the sweetest....I don't want to see another oil slick any time soon.

Karen, I was really shaken, but glad it turned out that no one was injured.

John, as I recalled everyone stopped except one person. Nine out of ten is not bad.

Debbie, me too! the police really got there fast, considering we were out on a country road.

Carla, so was I..thanks for stopping by!

Rebecca, I know they were so happy you stayed with them, that is very scary. I am glad you are ok too. Living up here in the northeast people get over confident when it rains, thinking it is nothing like snow. But it is oh so dangerous at times, especially when the road gets that oily slick on it.

Whew.... good job!

Rebecca - the mom and daughter are so lucky that you are the good Samaritan that you are - what a scary situation. The town needs to clean up that oil spill and now or others might not be so lucky. (This is one of the many reasons I hate it that my husband has a motorcycle) - a car is one thing but a motorcyclist doesn't have a chance. I told my son I'd disown him if he ever gets one - I spent to much time in the trauma unit to see the afthernmath of motorcycle accidents.

Rebecca,  You were their angel in their frightening moment of need.  Clearly you just went into action and did the right thing. Staying with them and providing them comfort was a loving gesture. They could not have had a better angel to watch over them.
