Strange But Pretty Looking Bug

Strange Looking Visitor -- While out in the yard yesterday I noticed this strange visitor and had to get a picture.  Strange but pretty markings and coloring.  Instead of being symetrical on left and right its two sides were similar, but, different.  It seems strange that the front left leg is black and the right blue?

Hi Robyn and Sue,

That would freak me out a little to see such a bug.  Wow, I really want to know what that is and how common it is.  Wow!

I believe that is the giant ghost tiger roach. They are from Canada and are on the verge of being extinct. You might have the last known specimen in America! In other words, I don’t have a clue, but it sure is pretty.

Hi Sue, Gosh this insect really knows how to dress itself up to make it look bigger than it truly is.  Those eyes on top.  Like others said, a cockroach, but dressed in lace.

Great eyes on your part!

Eric might be on to something!

Oh Sue, that's a weird one, but I kind of like it...quite interesting. Well you can put lace on a cockroach, but it's still... :)

Yikes - I have to tell you a picture that big of a bug kinda gives me the willies!  Even tho it is a very pretty bug.  I also got a freaked out by Eric's (#12) comment (until realizing he was joking)...thinking I hadn't heard about those giant ghost tiger roaches...and I live in Canada!  LOL

Eeeck, Sue, please keep those up in NC; we have enough strange bugs and such here all ready. My husband's first words were "someone painted it" but who would do that? That would mean you had to touch it:)

Eric -- you had me going for a sec!  Thanks for commenting.

Gloria -- I like your comparison "a cockroach dressed in lace".

Debb -- I agree, weird but pretty.

Karen -- Yes, Eric had me going for a moment as well!

Toni -- I checked later in the day and he/she/it had moved on.  I can't guarantee "it" isn't heading to Florida!

That has to be one of the prettiest bugs I’ve ever seen, and there’s no picture of it in my beetle book. Seems like something that pretty would have a picture in the book.

Hi Russel and thanks for trying to look it up and give it a name.  I love the markings and glad it waited for me to put my 2 "kids" back into the house and grab my camera.

Sue and Robin, This is an odd looking bug ... yet pretty.  It certainly looks harmless ... but you never know what they blue leg is hosting! (LOL)

Definitely a hyrbid of some sort. Maybe a nursery or nearby university would be able to help you identify it.

What an awesome looking bug, I would be interested if finding out what it is. I notice in the comments no one seemed to have come up with the answer.

It's always good to hear from you Russel and yes, I had a fine Fourth of July.  A special blessing was hearing Ollie North speak at our church on Sunday.

Hi Todd, yes it is an awesome looking bug.  I love the markings and so glad I got its picture.  As of yet no one can seem to "name" it.  Thanks for stopping by.

EEEWWW, would not want to run into that bug, no matter what it is!     It does look like someone painted it, but cannot imagine someone touching it either!     Eric --- don't scare those in Canada!   LOL

In case you never found out... Its a moth. It's a kind of leopard moth. Not a beetle

And it's just emerged from its pupae form, hence why it's wings are small.
