Is free cell phone service in your future?

By

There have been lots of rumors about Google starting their own cell phone service. Also lots of rumors of how it would work and what the cost would be...and of course, why is Google so intrigued.

There is one company in Brittain that is providing FREE CELL SERVICE. It's called BLYK. BLYK is targetting the heaviest users of cell phones...the 16-24 crowd. The catch is that you have to listen to a COMMERCIAL AD that is played over the phone line.

Would you be willing to listen to a commercial/ad to get rid of your monthly cell bills?

Interesting theory - I don't think I could stand it personally.  There is a company - 1-800-FREE-411 that provides free 411 directory assistance.  You call, and listen to the first commercial.  You then tell a computer your listing, and if it can't understand you or find the listing, only then are you transfered to a person.  Once they have found your number, you're transfered back to ANOTHER commercial ad.  Only after that do you actually get the phone number you called in for - and they don't even connect you, meaning you have to either have a text-message sent to your phone, or write it down, or try to remember it and redial it yourself!  What a pain... It turns a simple 411 call into a 5 minute ordeal!  I don't think the free cell phone thing would be any different.

Competition is great for consumers and is good for people in any industry.  It would be interesting what it would do to the current price of mobile phone service.

Do I sound a bit like DOJ here?

My neighbor's cousin studies at the University of Lester in London and has told me that Byk is actually a big deal over there. It's doesn't play adverts via audio - insted, it sends you SMS and MMS messages relevant to your lifestyle and then gives you free calls and SMS in return. But she tells me thatyou cant get it if you're over 25.

Knew there was a catch! Seriously - i wouldn't mind getting free calls just for recieving some coupons via SMS. Apparently, McDonalds is an advertiser and they give free coupons to blyk audience. That's a win-win...!
