Are you a dutiful duck or a wild goose?

Being a dutiful duck can be boring..I mean, those that make waves are often the ones noticed..and often popular for doing things we all wish we had the guts to say and do while the dutiful duck moves along steady with the other ducks, safely doing those things that work, but hardly venturing out of that safety zone.

Those wild geese types..you know..the ones that fly off here and there, trying all new things, new companies..venturing out...they're making things happen..testing those waters ..so that the dutiful ducks can safely swim there when the waves settle.

Me?,I'm more of a dutiful duck..although I do like to venture to the edge every now and again. I like learning things from those wild geese and then taking them in my steadfast dutiful duck way and applying them in my business. I like having that support of those other ducks that I've gotten to know that hang in the same pond.

So I wonder..can a dutiful duck still move forward and grow without taking those risks that the wild goose is eager to take? PS..came back to add this...I figure since I'm blogging..and using video, I just might have a bit of wild geese in me yet. Yes!

Hi Cindy - Interesting question (and great photo to illustrate it). I would say I am a combo. I'm pretty dutiful, but I also like to think outside the box and do things a bit different form everyone else. Helps you to stand out from the crowd.

Hi Susan, I went back in and added the PS...in after thought I was thinking that I have started blogging, have made some videos..so I guess I'm like you and not altogether a dutiful duck. It does pay to be a forward thinker. I do however sometimes need that nudge to get off that step and hop in the lake.

You know I grew up a Dutiful Duck, with that wild-hair goose inside. I was the oldest child--does that explain it?

What was that popular phrase years ago, something about flying with the ______________, but I work with turkeys....remember that?

My favorite bird cartoon is one I saw in my parents' basement for years...two vultures sitting on a wire and the one says to the other, "Patience, my A**! I wanna Kill SOMETHING!"

(Sorry, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up...see where that wild goose just reared its ugly head??)

Hi Gayle..LOL..I'm thinking that was Heckle and Jeckle maybe?I was just going through and trying to find a video with that line..but lots of them. I used to watch them as well. I think most dutiful ducks have a bit of wild hair inside just waitin to get out! Oh..and I was the middle child...maybe that explains that!

Hi Kwee, thanks for stopping by! I agree..though more of a dutiful type ( I probably should have used another word than dutiful) one always needs to move past those comfort zones to grow. It's just a matter of being the front runner in things..or the type that sits back and waits for the kinks to be ironed out before moving forward. Having a bit of both in certain areas is good.

What a creative post, Cindy. Was there something that inspired it? I suppose as I got older and had more and more responsibility, I became more "dutiful." It's much harder when you're in charge of more than just yourself. I do have a favorite expression which escapes me at this hour of the morning but it goes something like this - "it's much easier to do what you want now, and apologize profusely afterwards for not having asked permission or followed protocol." Those are not the exact words but I do practice them.

Cindy I am a bit of both I think. I am always up for a new adventure and am willing to take risks, however it sometimes feels a lot safer being the dutiful duck and watching, letting someone else experiment and then following suit. I do believe I prefer the new adventure though, like joining Active Rain. This has really been a new adventure for me that I have come to love.

Hi Mary, I think it's healthy to push ourselves in some areas..but yet keep that safety net in those areas that we know work. I know as I get older, I feel more comfy taking more risks and venturing out.
