The Cumberland Trail became Tennessee 58th State Park in 1998. It is not one continuous trail. It is 300 miles of trail beginning in Cumberland Gap National Park (KY) and extending to Chickamuaga Chattanooga National Military Park. The Grassy Cove Segment is in Cumberland County. This segment of the trail is accessed in Crab Orchard. At the top of the mountain at the beginning of the trail is a stone chimney. It is the remenants of an old homestead that belonged to Dr. A. C. Gill a professor of minerology. He purchased Black Mountain property in 1890 for a summer home. All that remains is the spring house and the chimney. They opened their home to the children of the Cumberland Mountain School. Dr. Gill died 1 month after his retirement. Mrs. Gill turned over her 500 acres to the Methodist Episcopal Church. After the Cumberland Mountain School was closed the church sold the land to the State of Tennessee at less than market value.
