Preparing that back country Greenwich, CT., Fairfield County, CT. estate to go on the market. About that deer situation.

One of the great joys about living here in the hills of southern New England is the wildlife. Having cast aside the agrarian roots of centuries past, most of the fields around here have reverted to forest many decades ago. Though, we do still put out a bumper crop of Bankers and Wall Street derivative guys. Booyah!

From deep within the forested perimeter, countless eyes are constantly watching and waiting.
Greenwich, Ct, Fairfield County Ct. Chipmunk The coyotes waiting to dine on the local Bishon Frise herd; The Greenwich, CT. Mountain Lion, eager to dine on anyone or anything; The raccoons standing their ground over garbage bags splayed out on the driveway, steadfastly refusing to leave. Even when whacked with a broom. Those guys are a scary crazy; The skunks, 'nuff said; The chipmunks, hellbent on world  domination through their stupefying ability to replicate at the speed of light. I swear there are 50,000 of them in my yard alone. Soon the entire earth will be covered by chipmunks. I dislike those fuzzy little bastards. Incessantly chirping all day, taking just a single big bite out of each individual tomato. And the digging, These creatures make John Henry look like a teenage slacker.

Greenwich, Ct, Fairfield County Ct. deer damageAhhh, but the deer here. All other creatures pale by comparison. None but the deer, offer the one-two-three punch of auto body damage, shrub decimation and the ravages of Lyme disease.  And what is the deal with a giant animal like that pooping out little raisin sized pellets, seriously? It's a scatological embarrassment. They should see a doctor about that.

At least they are good for the local economy. In these here parts, there is a multi billion dollar industry devoted to thwarting these giant woods rats.  Whistles that attach to your car, foul smelling concoctions to spray on your plants, predator urine, motion sensor activated water spraying contraptions, deer resistant plants (it really means they will come back and eat them later after the tastier stuff is gone).  The list goes on and on.

It is not a well kept secret that there is a deer problem here. So it goes without saying, the more fortified a home is against this woodland scourge, the more total appeal it will have to a potential buyer. When preparing that back country Fairfield County, CT. estate to go on the market, robust deer proofing can be a very strong selling point. Protection for your shrubs and your family. You still have to be careful on the roads.

I have been thrice punched by the deer.  So with me, it's personal.

Yeah, we can help with that.

I have what seems like hundreds of chipmunks too, but the grandbabies love watching them, so for me they are entertainment!  We enjoy our deer too, although I have to agree about the destruction to the plants.  I never thought about them being an issue when selling...when we moved in we were excited to see them because we had no idea what they were capable of...or that they had such attitude!  This guy stuck his tongue out at us!

Sharon, When my family first moved to Wilton, CT. we were fascinated by the herds of deer that congregated in our front yard at night. Then I realized the $$ thousands $$ of plant destruction they caused. When I hit one driving home one night my dislike for them was cemented. The picture you have of the deer is pretty funny though.

I’m laughing so hard while reading that, that my voice recognition software has no idea what I’m trying to dictate, so I’m having to type this. I’ll sent you the medical bill from my repetitive stress injury relapse. JJJJ

Peter - I have deer fenced our property completely 25 years ago, and now all my neighbors have.  It's so delightful!   You should try it!

Dagny, I was thinking of your fenced in compound while writing this. Every year the Hosta become the deer buffet, and every year I am closer to the big fence in. Soon.

Sounds like the opening paragraph of your new book.

I had to come back. One of our morning talk shows, DSC, has people nominate names of bands throughout the year from things they’ve read, heard, etc. Then they vote on the best ten at Christmastime. I’m going to nominate “Scatalogical Embarrassment” as the name of their new band.

Eric, let me know if you win the naming prize. It is a great band name. It would have to be more punk than classic.
