Do you think the classic Drive-In Movie Theater is a thing of the past..? Not anymore, because Austin now has the Blue Starlite Drive In. some of you are doubtless too young to remember the old style drive-in movies. However I have fond memories of the whole family piling into the station wagon and maybe packing a cooler full of Coke and sweet tea. We went to the drive in movies because it was fun for the whole family. Later as teens we would stuff as many friends as possible into the car, because a car "ticket" was only $4. If you went to the regular cinema a single ticket was outrageously over priced at $1.00-$2.00! Sadly drive-in theaters disappeared about 25 years ago. I know I have not personally seen one since the late 70's.

I am happy to report Austin has a new one called the Blue Starlite Drive In. They have two locations: 2326 E. Cesar Chavez and 1001 E. 6th Street. They show arthouse flicks, classics and every ones cult favorites. Tickets are $5. per person or $25. per car. They offer the vintage movie speaker to clip to your car window for an extra $5, otherwise you can simply tune your car stereo to the proper channel and hear the movie soundtrack. The gates open at 8:00pm and movies start promptly at 9:00pm. Since the theaters have very limited capacity I strongly suggest ordering your tickets online. Their website is www.BlueStarlite.com. They have only been open a few months and hopefully they will be a big hit and stick around for a long time!

I have thought for a long time drive-ins should make a come back. They are so neat and romantic. I have heard of some of them being renovated. Maybe we will see more and more. Memories, memories, memories.

Dear Will,

I loved them as a kid and I am thrilled they aremaking a comeback!

Dear Carole,

I am totally cool with it!! It is very nostalgic and I love that. Its hard to think kids these days have no idea what a drive in is like?!? Hopefully they will be converts too!

AHHHH Yes, the good old days.  Sneaking in in the trunk and climbing through the back seat...When that was still possible!

What great nostalgia! It's just too hot here anymore to sit in the car. I do love the outdoor theaters. Like William, I hugged many a trunk with friends! LOL

Dear William, I remember that ton! What fun!

Dear Deb, I have to agree its a bit toasty in the summer here to sit in the car for two hours. However I think its a perfect fall/winter excursion! I will be there in the ragtop this fall for sure!
